Savath is a 63-year-old retired rice farmer from Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. She is married with two daughters, three sons, and twelve grandchildren. She lives with her husband, a retired soldier, and her youngest daughter, who is a rice farmer. In her free time, she enjoys visiting her grandchildren and going to the pagoda on Buddha Day. About three months ago, Savath began experiencing blurry vision in her right eye, making it difficult to see clearly, recognize faces, and move around independently. She has been diagnosed with a detached retina, which requires surgery to repair. Fortunately, on June 17th, our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, will help Savath undergo retinal detachment repair surgery. She can contribute $100, but needs help raising $606 more to fund her procedure and care. Savath said, "I hope after surgery my eye can see better, so I can go out and recognize relatives, and I want to help my daughter to take care of the grandchildren and do homework well."

Khon is 73 years old and a retired rice farmer from Cambodia. She is married and has two daughters, one son, and five grandchildren. She lives with her husband, who still works as a farmer, and one of their grandsons, who is a student. The family's primary financial support comes from their youngest daughter, who works in a garment factory. In her free time, Khon enjoys listening to monks' prayers on the radio. About a year ago, Khon developed a cataract in her left eye. This condition gradually caused itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, making vision appear as if through a frosty or fogged-up window. As her eyesight worsened, Khon struggled to recognize faces, distinguish colors, and see clearly. She also became fearful of falling while walking, leaving her unable to travel independently or carry out many daily activities. When Khon learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On July 24th, she is scheduled to undergo a phacoemulsification cataract surgery with implantation of an intraocular lens in her left eye. This procedure is expected to restore her vision, allowing her to regain her independence and return to daily life with confidence. Khon now needs $263 to cover the cost of her surgery and care. Khon shared, "I hope after surgery, my eye can see clearly, I can recognize my relatives, and go out well. I don’t worry about my eye anymore."

Gutema is a 23-year-old man from Ethiopia, married with one daughter. He works as a day laborer, a physically demanding job that requires him to use his full strength and mobility every day, typically at construction sites. Recently, Gutema was diagnosed with a severe infection in his thighbone that causes painful swelling. This condition has left him unable to perform the physical tasks his work demands. Because his income depends entirely on his ability to work each day, his family is now in a challenging situation. Without his mobility, his livelihood and his family’s stability is now at serious risk. The bone infection also causes him intense pain. Following Gutema's review at our medical partner's care center Saglan Wajee General Hospital, doctors have recommended that he undergoes a sequestrectomy, a surgical procedure involving the removal of fragments of infected dead bone or tissue. If not treated, it can lead to recurrent infections that may result in life-threatening complications. Fortunately, on June 4th, Gutema will undergo repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, is requesting $900 to fund Gutema's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will alleviate his symptoms and prevent serious long-term complications. "My family cannot afford to lose my ability to work, as I am responsible for everything in our home. The pain and the stress of not being able to provide for them is overwhelming. This surgery is the key to saving my livelihood," said Gutema.
