Un is a 61-year-old grandmother who dotes on her seven active grandchildren. She and her husband are rice farmers and have three sons and four daughters. One daughter lives with them and helps with housework and cooking. About one year ago, Un developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision and photophobia. She is afraid to use her stove because she cannot see numbers or dials, and is afraid she might injure herself or her daughter. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, thus is unable to travel on her own. When Un learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three and a half hours to seek treatment. On March 9th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery to implant an intraocular lens in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Un said, "My eye feels cloudy and I can't go outside to help with the rice crops. I hope after surgery I can see more easily and go outside by myself."

Hosiana is a three-year-old Tanzanian girl, with two loving parents and three siblings. Hosiana's parents are cattle breeders. Sadly, most of their cattle have died as a result of a persistent drought, and the few remaining cattle aren't healthy enough to attract buyers, so they are sold off at a loss for their family. In October 2021, Hosiana fell into a pit of flaming goat manure when she was playing with her friends. Her hands and the skin around her thighs were burned. Hosiana was given first aid at a local clinic, and received further treatment for her wounds at a hospital. After she had healed and returned home, Hosiana's mother noticed that Hosiana didn't have full range of motion of her hands. They were advised to return to the hospital, but lacked the funds to do so. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is stepping in to help. Hosiana requires several procedures, including burn contracture release of her right wrist and the third finger on her right hand, a skin graft, and the amputation of her pinkie finger. She will also need additional surgery on the rest of her body. All told, the family is seeking $1,088 to fund these procedures, which are scheduled for February 28th, at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre. Hosiana’s mother says: “My daughter has never talked. Sometimes I wonder if the fire accident is what caused this. I hope that she gets treatment to make her feel better.”

Souy is a 76-year-old loving grandmother. She has one daughter and eight grandchildren. Sadly, her husband passed away 10 years ago from tuberculosis. Nowadays, Souy lives with her daughter who sells fish in the local market. She enjoys spending time with her family and visiting her local pagoda. One year ago, Souy developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her cloudy vision and sensitivity to light. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, thus she is unable to travel on her own. When Souy learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for one hour seeking treatment. On February 13th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and implant an intraocular lens in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Souy needs help to fund this $253 procedure. She said, "After surgery I hope I can see better and recognize people more easily."
