Caroline is a 32-year-old Ugandan woman who lives with her husband in their two-roomed semi-permanent house. Caroline and her husband are small-scale farmers. For four years, Caroline has been having a backache which she has tried to mediate with medication. However, the pain has been persistent, thus she visited Nyakibale hospital to get a diagnosis. The surgeon suspected a mass and ordered a scan which confirmed the condition. The surgeon recommended she receive a curative laparotomy, a surgery where an incision is made in the abdomen to look into the abdominal cavity and treat necessary health conditions. On February 9th, Caroline will undergo surgery at the Karoli Lwanga Hospital. Carolina needs help raising $242 to fund her surgery and care. Caroline says “I will praise God and live to remember the day my health will be been brought back. I will live for better health as I resume my farming and strengthen my marriage hoping to deliver at one time.”

Hope is a 54-year-old farmer, married with eight children. Five of her children are married and building their own families now too. Both she and her husband are small-scale farmers. They live in a semi-permanent house with three rooms. For the past one year, Hope has been experiencing lower abdominal pain and uncomfortable symptoms. This pain has made it difficult for her to work as she experiences a lot of pain. She has been diagnosed with pre-malignant cervical lesion and is currently unable to raise funds for her treatment. She needs to undergo a gynecological surgery to heal and stop the risk of cancer. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Hope's surgery. On February 28th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Hope will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain. Hope says “I have pain worsening from time to time but I hope since I have come to you for the support I will live better, and, thus, resume my work.”

Anthony, who is 14 years old, lives with his parents and seven siblings in Kenya. His parents make charcoal to earn a living for the family, but their situation has been made more difficult by the inter-communal war in their area, which has forced the family to move on several occasions in order to find safety. Anthony was diagnosed with anorectal malformations at birth. He had surgery to correct the blockage and did well for a few months, but the blockage recurred. He could not pass stool as he had done before, but his parents could not afford to take him back to the hospital. His stomach started to increase in size and has grown over the years. Over time he completely lost the ability to move his bowels and stopped going to school. Late last year the county government social worker heard of Anthony's situation and contacted the family. She was able to finance their transport to the hospital for Anthony to be examined. As a result of the examination, it was determined that Anthony required surgery urgently. Anthony is now scheduled for a colostomy on February 15th at BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is seeking $1,152 to cover the costs of this life-saving procedure. Anthony’s Aunt said: “It pains us that Anthony has to go through this. We really hope that he will be treated and go back to school.”
