Joel is a 23-year-old from Kenya and the third-born in his family. His parents separated, and Joel moved from his hometown after completing high school to pursue work as a bodaboda rider (motorcycle taxi) to earn a living. Finding driving work can be inconsistent, and motorcycle accidents have been increasing lately in Kenya. In March, Joel was driving with two passengers when they were hit in a hit-in-run by an overtaking vehicle. The passengers were not hurt, but Joel landed on his knees, sustained bruises, and fractured his right femur. He is in pain and unable to walk or work as a result of his injuries. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), can help Joel heal. On April 3rd, Joel will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation, to relieve his pain and allow him to walk and resume work. AMH is requesting $1,049 to fund this procedure. Joel shared: “I am lying here in bed desperate. I kindly plead for support so that I can be back on my feet. My parents are not together and cannot even make it to help me.”

Ann is a 16-year-old student from Kenya. Ann was orphaned when her father took his and her mother's life. Fortunately, Ann, who aspires to become an architect, now lives with relatives who adopted her. In October 2022, Ann was also in a horrible incident and one of her fingers was cut in half. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where she underwent surgery. While the right middle finger has healed, it developed a contracture during the healing process. The contracture is causing Ann to experience difficulties when she uses her hand - keeping her from writing and drawing. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Ann receive treatment. On May 3rd, surgeons at AIC Kijabe Hospital will perform contracture release surgery, which should improve Ann's grip and her ability to hold things, aiding in her aspirations to become an architect. Now she needs your help to fund this $1,500 procedure. Ann says, “Architects draw building designs; this is what I want to do. I have been through a lot, but I am determined.”

Joshua is a 21-year-old man who works as a motorbike taxi driver. His parents are small-scale farmers. Joshua is the second of seven children and has just finished form four in school. Joshua had a traffic accident last month and severely injured his leg. He was taken to the hospital where he had popliteal bypass surgery—a surgical procedure used to treat damaged leg arteries above or below the knee and used to salvage limbs that are at risk of amputation. Fasciotomy—the cutting of tissue on his leg—was also necessary. Following that procedure, Joshua had surgery for external fixation to align his leg bones because his doctor identified that he had a drop foot. Joshua has been in the hospital for over a month and is doing well, but he has open wounds where fasciotomy was performed. He now needs skin grafting to close his open wounds, replace lost skin and improve the appearance of the damaged skin. He is appealing for help so that he may quickly heal and be able to go home. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Joshua with his medical needs. Joshua needs your help funding this $1,089 procedure.
