Medjine is a 17-year-old student from Haiti. She lives with her parents and younger sister in a neighborhood of the capital city. Medjine is in the eleventh grade and would like to study medicine or nursing.
Medjine has a cardiac condition called rheumatic mitral regurgitation. One of the four valves of her heart was severely damaged due to a rheumatic fever she suffered earlier in childhood; as a result, her heart cannot adequately pump blood through her body.
Medjine will fly to the Dominican Republic to receive treatment. On May 14th, she will undergo cardiac surgery, where surgeons will remove Medjine’s damaged valve and implant an artificial replacement. Another organization, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is contributing $9,000 to pay for surgery.
Medjine’s family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery preparation. Our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance is requesting $1,500 to cover labs, medicines, check-ups, and follow-up appointments. It also supports securing passport and travel requirements for the social workers who will accompany Medjine’s family overseas.
Medjine shared: “I am looking forward to getting this surgery behind me so I can focus on my studies and my family.”
