Poe is 29-year-old woman, originally from Karen state in Burma. She presently lives together with her husband, her daughter and her niece, in a refugee camp in Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand. Previously Poe’s husband worked as a day laborer outside of the camp but since the beginning of 2024 he has been unemployed. Poe is a homemaker and takes care of her young daughter at home. Her niece is a student in the refugee camp.
Poe’s family receives about 12,000 baht (approx. 400 USD) per year from her family members in the United States of America, and a further 1,059 baht (approx. 35 USD) every month on a cash card from The Border Consortium, which they use to buy food and other household items. Their monthly total income is not enough to cover their daily expenses, so sometimes they purchase items on credit at their local shop and pay it back when they have money. They receive free basic health care in the refugee camp, provided by Malteser International (MI) Thailand.
Poe is currently expecting her second child. Due to a higher-risk pregnancy, her doctors recommend that she deliver via a caesarean section. This way, doctors can ensure the safety of both mother and child.
Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is helping Poe undergo a C-Section on November 6th. This procedure will cost $1,500, and Poe needs your support.
Poe says, “In the future, I want to become a teacher because I love teaching. Once my children are a bit older, I plan to apply for a teaching position at a school in the camp.”
