The birth of twins Jane and her sister brought joy to their parents. She is the 4th born in a family of five. She is a bright grade 1 student who likes reading, drawing and colouring. Her family hails from a small village, and both her parents are farmers. Soon after birth, her parents discovered the challenge of Jane being born with multiple birth conditions: Bilateral clubfeet, hydrocephalus, and spina bifida. They shared that they were quite shocked as they had not heard or experienced any of them before. Treatment for hydrocephalus and spina bifida required a collaborative effort between orthopaedic specialists and neurosurgeons. At ten days, she underwent a spina bifida surgery at a local hospital to address the neural tube defect affecting her spine and then hydrocephalus. Jane is a resilient girl and has overcome so much, carrying a big smile on her face. She now needs treatment for her clubfoot condition as her feet are bent inward, hindering her mobility. She is scheduled to undergo surgery, which will be impactful to her because she will be able to walk confidently like other children and continue with her education. “My desire is to see my daughter walking well and any kind of help is greatly appreciated,” Jane’s mother told us.

Navy is a 57-year-old farmer. Married and residing with her elderly husband, Navy is blessed with seven children – two daughters and five sons – all of whom are married and live in Kampot province. As a dedicated rice farmer, Navy works in the fields throughout the day, contributing to her family's well-being alongside the support provided by their children. During the windy dry season, her evenings are devoted to caring for her husband and keeping her house clean. Six months ago, Navy tripped and fractured the humerus bone in her right upper arm. She had surgery, where hardware was placed to align her fractured bone into place for optimal healing. The metalwork is causing her chronic pain, risks infection, and she still has limited function in her arm. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On January 3rd, Navy will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $304. This procedure will remove the metal, and she hopes her chronic pain will be less. She said: "I hope after surgery, I will have no pain and can go back to farming and caring for my family."

Lucia is a baby from southern Bolivia. Her mother stays home with her, and her father is a delivery driver. Lucia was born with a heart condition called coarctation of the aorta. A major blood vessel leading to the heart is too small, which leaves Lucia weak and unable to properly grow. Additionally, she has turner syndrome. Lucia needs surgery to open the aorta to its full size. This will allow blood to flow more easily so she can grow up healthy. Lucia's mother states: "Our family is so happy to know that our daughter can finally have this surgery; we have been hoping for this opportunity since she was born."
