Meet 33-year-old Wilson, a married man living in Kenya and a father of two young children. “Wilson used to earn for his family by riding a taxi motorbike” while his wife cares for the children, shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Earlier this year, Wilson fractured his left femur when he was hit by a car while riding his motorbike. “Wilson was taken to the nearest hospital, where he was put on skin traction" and received a plaster cast. This treatment failed to heal his fracture, and "if not operated, Wilson may never be able to use his leg," AMHF adds. Wilson is the sole financial supporter of his family, and his injury prevents him from working. “Wilson’s family is depending on friends and family members for their basic needs, and are therefore unable to raise the money required for this important treatment.” For $1,125, Wilson will receive an open reduction and internal fixation surgery. In this two-part surgery, the bone is first put back in place and then is fixed with an internal device. AMHF expects that Wilson’s leg will heal well after the procedure and he will be able to walk again. “It has been five months of pain and struggle," Wilson shares. "May God help me to see my leg healed and being able to walk again. I pray that soon I will go back to work and support my family.”

Florence is just six days old. She is the firstborn child to two loving parents. Her mother is a tailor and her father sells merchandise in a nearby trading center. The family owns a small piece of land, which they farm for home consumption. Florence has spina bifida, which causes an open mass on her back. Without surgery, Florence is likely to develop an infection, have a tethered spinal cord, and develop scoliosis. Florence's parents earn enough to cover the basic needs for their family but they have been unable to raise funds for Florence’s surgery. “I look forward to seeing my daughter’s back closed. It makes me feel so sad to see it open, and I pray we’ll get the support we need for her surgery,” her mother says. For $980, Florence will receive surgery to close the mass on her back. She will be at much less risk of developing an infection or other conditions caused by spina bifida.

Jay Bahadur is a 45-year-old carpenter from Nepal. He cut his finger several weeks ago when he was chopping wood. He now has a bacterial infection on the skin and tissues of his left hand, which can spread to the rest of his body. Infections like Jay Bahadur's can be life-threatening if left untreated. She incurred debt while caring for her mother, and cannot even come close to being able to afford the hysterectomy she needs to treat her condition. She is looking for help to raise $540 to cover the cost of her surgery, which will allow her to recover fully and begin working again.

Diego is a lively eight-year-old living in an area in Guatemala that has recently been deeply affected by mudslides. The entire community is currently living in temporary housing with no regular medical care. Diego was born with microtia, or deformed ears.
