Etiness is a 47-year-old farmer and doughnut vendor. She is a single mother of two, living in Maonga Village, Ntcheu District. Life has never been easy for Etiness, but she has always managed to provide for her children through hard work and perseverance. She relies on farming and selling Mandasi (doughnuts), earning about $15 monthly. However, with rising prices and the growing cost of living, her income barely covers the necessities. Etiness often says it is by God’s grace that she can feed her children and ensure they have what they need for school
Ten years ago, Etiness began to experience troubling symptoms, including a small swelling on her neck. For the past year, Etiness has also suffered from an umbilical hernia. Still, it was only when her sister, Stelia, insisted that she go to the hospital that she realized the severity of her condition. After visiting Nkhoma’s surgical clinic, the doctors confirmed her worst fears. She was diagnosed with a toxic goiter. She needed surgery to treat the goiter before addressing the hernia, and she was started on medication three weeks ago. The goiter has made it difficult for Etiness to eat properly, and she experiences frequent hot flashes, feeling feverish and weak. The doctors assured her that surgery would relieve these symptoms and prevent further complications. It would allow her to eat without pain, restore her strength, and give her the ability to care for her family more effectively. However, the road to recovery is a costly one. Etiness has no financial means to pay for the surgery. Her sister, who has already spent a significant amount of funds on hospital trips, has no more money to offer her. Despite this, Etiness remains hopeful for a brighter future. She is determined to be strong for her children and get the treatment she needs to continue being the loving mother they depend on. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Etiness receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on March 6th at our medical partner’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $491, and she and her family need help raising money.
“Thank you for the opportunity to be seen and heard by caring individuals who are in no way related to me, but have a heart to give. This means a lot to us. I believe that with this surgery, I will be able to regain my strength and provide for my children like I always have. I trust that, with God’s help, I will overcome this challenge and continue to be the mother they need,” said Etiness.
