Korn is a 66-year-old rice farmer from Kampong Thom province, Cambodia. She is married and lives with her husband, who is also a farmer. They have two sons and four daughters, as well as eight grandchildren. All of her children work as rice farmers. In her free time, Korn enjoys going to the pagoda. About five years ago, Korn developed a pterygium in her right eye, causing her constant eye irritation, tearing, itchiness, redness, and blurry vision. She feels embarrassed about how her eye looks and is ashamed to look others in the eye. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sun damage, wind, or dust, and the cells grow abnormally over the pupil. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, working, and going anywhere outside. When Korn learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. Korn needs a surgical procedure to remove the abnormal conjunctiva from the cornea surface and replace it with a conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence. The procedure is scheduled for August 7th. She can contribute $75 but needs your help to raise an additional $223 to fund her procedure and care. Korn said: "I hope that after this operation, the irritation and tearing will stop, and I won’t have to worry about my eyes anymore. I also want to help plant rice with my husband again."
