Sok is a 71-year-old grandmother from Kandal province. Her husband passed away about 10 years ago. She has three daughters and six grandchildren. She used to sell mattresses near the village market, but she stopped several years ago. Sok currently lives with her oldest daughter, who is a rice farmer. She enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio to improve her mental health.
About two years ago, Sok developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision and sensitivity to light. Sok shared that she no longer sees colors anymore and does not like to go anywhere by herself. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Sok learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On July 4th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Sok’s family can contribute $100 but needs help to raise $163 more to fund her procedure and care.
Sok said, “I hope that after the operation, my eyesight will improve so I can recognize people more easily, go outside, and walk around by myself again.”
