Torng is a 58-year-old woman from Kampong Speu province, Cambodia. She sells snacks for a living in her village. She is divorced and lives alone near her sister. In her free time, Torng enjoys watching Khmer comedy and keeping up with the latest news.
About three years ago, Torng developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision. Recently, it has worsened to the point where she can hardly see anything out of her left eye. She has also become sensitive to light (photophobia), which makes it difficult for her to go outside. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Torng learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On August 5th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Torng can contribute $50 but needs help to raise the remaining $213 to fund her procedure and care.
Torng said: “I hope that after this operation, my eye will improve so I can return to selling food, travel on my own, and take good care of myself.”
