Sout is a 72-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. She is a widow with one son and two daughters, as well as five grandchildren, all of whom live in the same province and provide support for her. Sadly, her husband passed away ten years ago due to complications from diabetes. She currently resides with one of her daughters, who runs a grocery business from the front of their home. Her daily routine involves keeping the house clean, cooking, and listening to monks praying on the radio.
About one year ago, Sout developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, headaches, and watery eyes. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Sout learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On May 16th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Sout’s family can contribute $100, but needs help to raise $153 more to fund her procedure and care.
Sout said, “I hope after surgery I will see well again. I want to go outside on my own again without help.”
