Ireen is a 24-year-old single mother from Malawi. To support her family, Ireen grows maize. While fetching firewood, Ireen fell and fractured her elbow. Because of the pain, she is unable to perform daily tasks and work on the farm. If left untreated, it may result in the non-union of the fractured bone. She is scheduled for surgery on March 12th and our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $525 for her surgery and care. Treatment will relieve Ireen of the pain and help her resume working on her farm again. Ireen says, “I hope to receive treatment so that I can take care of my child.”

Dan is a 36 year-old-factory worker who lives in Prey Veng province with his wife and 5-year-old son. His wife works as a mango farmer and Dan has been working in a nearby food factory for several years. In his free time, he likes playing soccer with his friends, or with his son. In 2021, Dan was driving at night and was in a motorbike accident that caused a fracture in his right femur. He went to a local clinic and doctors fixated hardware to heal the fracture. Now, the fracture has healed but the hardware is uncomfortable and it is difficult for him to walk and run. He is also at risk of further infection. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On January 11th, Dan will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $304. This procedure will eliminate pain and help him walk easily again. He shared, "I am hoping I can have surgery so the pain will go away and I can run around with my son."

Brian is a teenager from Kenya. He is the third born in a family of seven children. He stopped going to school last year in March after he fell ill and currently stays at home mostly in pain. His mother is a subsistence farmer and his father works on construction sites to provide for the family. The family does not have a medical insurance coverage and cannot raise the required amount of money to pay for Brian's treatment. Brian has a painful swelling in a sensitive area which impacts his movement and his ability to engage in any physical activities. He has been to different hospitals without any improvement. Earlier this year, Brian was brought to BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital where he underwent tests and has been scheduled for an urgent surgery. Brian was diagnosed with cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both of the testicles remains undescended. If left untreated, Brian has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and future fertility problems. Brian will be receiving assistance from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH) and is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on February 22nd. AMH is requesting $646 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. Brian says, “I want the pain to go away so that I can go back to school.”
