Lorenzo is a three-year-old boy from Haiti who lives with his parents and sister. He likes to dress up in suits and go to church.
Lorenzo was born with an atrial septal defect, or a hole between the two upper chambers of his heart. Blood leaks through the hole without first obtaining oxygen from the lungs, causing him weakness and shortness of breath. When he was a baby, a surgical team performed a temporary repair that would allow his heart to grow larger. Now, Lorenzo is ready for a second surgery.
On November 15, Lorenzo traveled to the Cayman Islands to undergo treatment. Surgeons will perform an open-heart surgery, sewing a patch to close the hole. Now, his family needs help to pay his $1,500 travel fees.
“I am so glad that Lorenzo’s heart can be completely fixed, so he can gain weight and run around and play more actively,” says his mother.

Lorenzo had a successful repair of his heart.
When Lorenzo was a toddler, he underwent a temporary repair of an atrial septal defect, a hole between the upper two chambers of his heart. The hole was closed with a temporary patch. This repair helped Lorenzo grow big enough to have a permanent repair done.
During the second surgery, the temporary patch in Lorenzo’s heart was removed and a permanent patch put in its place. Lorenzo is doing well and is expected to grow normally without any cardiac symptoms.
His mother says, “I would like to thank God and everyone who helped Lorenzo have this surgery, and my family in Haiti also says thank you!”
