Carlos is a young boy of few words, but unlimited energy. When he breaks out into his toothy and goofy smile, you can’t help but grin right alongside this kid.
What really sets Carlos apart from other kids is that he has twelve fingers; six on each hand. Your initial reaction may be something along the lines of, “Think of all the things I could accomplish if I had six fingers!” but on a practical level, Carlos’ extra fingers are not fully functional and are inhibiting his ability to write, causing him to fall behind in school. On an emotional level, there is an extreme prejudice against people with disabilities in Zambia and Carlos’ extra fingers are causing him to be ostracized by the other kids in his community.
Carlos hopes that by having the extra digits removed, he will be able to keep up in school and focus on learning rather than fending off jokes about his hands. For $1,000, we can fund his surgery, allowing Carlos’ charming personality and stunning smile to be the focus of attention rather than how many fingers he has on his hands!
