Vanna is a 25-year-old merchant from Cambodia. She is single, has four siblings, and lives with her parents. When she is not selling soft drinks at the market, she likes to play on Facebook. One month ago, Vanna developed a chalazion in her right eye, causing her irritation, tearing, and redness. A chalazion is an inflamed cyst in a patient's tear gland. She shared, "It is irritating me and makes it difficult for me to see clearly and get my work done." Vanna traveled to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, to receive treatment. On April 6th, surgeons will remove the cyst through a chalazion excision procedure. After recovery, Vanna's symptoms should improve. She needs help raising $187 to fund this procedure. "I hope that my eye will look and feel much better after my operation and I can continue to work at the market," Vanna said.

Monineath is a 9-year-old student in grade four from Cambodia. In school, she excels in reading and writing. When she is at home, she loves watching cartoons and going for walks with her parents. Monineath has two brothers and one sister; she is the youngest child, so she often gets her favorite treat, fried chicken and a coke. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Since birth, Monineath has dealt with scoliosis. She has had varying degrees of spinal curvature. She was recently operated on, but her condition has not been fixed and she needs further treatment. She has difficulty walking and experiences pain in her hip and back. Fortunately, Monineath learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Monineath of her pain and allow her to walk more easily. Treatment is scheduled for May 11th, and Monineath needs help raising $1,087 to pay for this procedure. Monineath's mother said, "I want my daughter to have the ability to walk without pain. Having that pain cleared up would make her so much more confident to go after her desire to be a teacher."

This past September, eight-year-old Nita suffered facial injuries from a gas explosion. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us, “Nita was diagnosed with necrosis of the skin around her nose, eyes, and forehead. She received treatment at another hospital where they closed the wounds, but did nothing to improve the appearance of her face.” The first grader from Cambodia hopes to be comfortable with her appearance again. She says, “I can’t go to study and my parents can’t go to work because they are spending time taking care of me and bringing me to doctors.” For $392, Nita will undergo facial reconstructive surgery. “The pedicle on her forehead will be divided and a flap revision surgery will be performed,” CSC explains. “Once healed, this will improve the appearance of Nita’s forehead.” Nita, who enjoys playing with her dolls, reading Khmer history books, and watching cartoons, shares, “I hope my nose can be better after surgery. After I am healed, I want to go back home and go to school normally. When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.”

Kind and energetic, Jane owns a small hotel in Kenya. She and her husband, who supplements her income by working six to twelve hours a day in a gold mine, are expecting their fourth child. Given their family's needs, saving money is tough for them. During her pregnancy, Jane has felt constant lower abdominal pain. She is hoping for a safe and successful delivery in a health facility, but she cannot afford it on her own. Our goal for Mother's Day is to help Jane's wishes come true. For $215, we can ensure that Jane delivers in a hospital setting and that she and her baby receive the care and attention they need. Let's make this happen for her!

Rothea was in an accident in April of this year in which he seriously injured his knee and ruptured a tendon in his quadriceps. His knee is very stiff, which is making it difficult to do everyday activities, and he is experiencing constant pain. Surgeons at our Cambodian medical partner want to repair Rothea's tendon with surgery and physiotherapy. They say this will help improve his mobility and enable him to return to life as usual. Let's pay for Rothea's $300 treatment so he can go back to work and enjoy his life again!

Carlos is a young boy of few words, but unlimited energy. When he breaks out into his toothy and goofy smile, you can’t help but grin right alongside this kid. What really sets Carlos apart from other kids is that he has twelve fingers; six on each hand. Your initial reaction may be something along the lines of, “Think of all the things I could accomplish if I had six fingers!” but on a practical level, Carlos’ extra fingers are not fully functional and are inhibiting his ability to write, causing him to fall behind in school. On an emotional level, there is an extreme prejudice against people with disabilities in Zambia and Carlos' extra fingers are causing him to be ostracized by the other kids in his community. Carlos hopes that by having the extra digits removed, he will be able to keep up in school and focus on learning rather than fending off jokes about his hands. For $1,000, we can fund his surgery, allowing Carlos' charming personality and stunning smile to be the focus of attention rather than how many fingers he has on his hands!

Yeison is four-months-old and fighting acute malnutrition. He lives with his mother and older siblings in Guatemala. Yeison's mother is still recovering from a difficult pregnancy and delivery. She is unable to afford milk formula to feed Yeison and nourish him back to health, and that's where we come in. For $215, we can fund Yeison's intensive nutritional therapy. This regimen will include nutritional monitoring for Yeison and nutritional coaching for his mother. His therapy will also include a four-months supply of supplemental milk formula.

Dila is a 5-year-old girl from Nepal who was burned in a fire 14 days ago. 25% of her lower body is covered in severe burns. If left untreated, Dila’s wounds will get infected, or worse, the skin will turn into a post-burn scar contracture and limit her mobility for the rest of her life. Fortunately, doctors at Nyaya Health can make sure Dila gets the burn treatment and skin graft surgery she needs to fully recover. Dila lives with her father, mother, two brothers, and one sister. Her family earns their living by farming a small piece of land. The land is hardly enough to sustain them, let alone pay for the expensive medical care Dila needs. Dila attends the local government nursery school and loves playing with her friends. Her parents want her to to complete her education. They are optimistic about their daughter’s treatment and believe she can get healthy again soon. Let’s help make it happen!

Marta is a 43-year-old wife and mother with with papillary thyroid cancer. Her doctors are confident that her cancer can be cured with surgery and radiation therapy. Without treatment, Marta could face debilitating symptoms that would prevent her from living a normal life. Marta has a loving husband and a 3-year-old son she adores. She came to the doctor when she noticed a lump growing on her neck. A biopsy immediately showed that the lump was cancerous. As with most indigenous people in Guatemala, cancer care is completely unaffordable for Marta. She needs our help to cover the cost of surgery, radiation, and travel. Alan is a 2-year-old boy with phimosis, a common condition in which the foreskin of the penis does not move easily down. In Alan’s case this had led to multiple infections. If left untreated, Alan will continue to suffer from pain and serious infections that limit his ability to live a normal life. Luckily, Alan’s very observant mother picked up on this problem early and has been vigilant about bringing him in to make sure that he gets the medical care he needs. Alan’s doctors told us that circumcision will cure this problem forever, so let’s help him get treatment and get on with his life!

Tilahun is an 18-year-old boy who has suffered from rheumatic heart fever (an inflammatory disease that can lead to heart failure) and mitral stenosis (a disorder that prevents the heart's mitral valve from opening fully) since birth. These two severe heart conditions leave Tilahun bedridden and have prevented him from ever attending school. Despite his heart problems, Tilahun is remarkably upbeat. Because of the severity of his condition, Tilahun needs to fly to India for life-saving heart surgery. Dr. Hodes believes that after receiving treatment, Tilahun will finally be able to attend school.
