Boramey is an adorable 2-year-old toddler from Cambodia. She has an older sister, who is seven and in the 1st grade, and an older brother, who is four and not in school yet. Her father works as a driver for a construction company, and her mother sells groceries at a local market. Boramey's favorite activities include playing with the other children in her neighborhood and snacking on bread. When Boramey was born, she experienced an injury called shoulder dystocia, which occurs when one or both of a baby's shoulders become stuck inside the pelvis during childbirth. As a result, the nerves responsible for providing feeling and movement in her shoulder and arm were stretched. Boramey cannot move her left arm and has no shoulder abduction or elbow or wrist flexion. She has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on her left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand; injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. Our medical partner's care center is the only center in Cambodia where the treatment Boramey needs is available. On January 3rd, she will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), is requesting $709 to fund this procedure. Boramey's parents were able to gather $100 to contribute to her care. Boramey's mother said: "I hope the doctors can fix her arm so she can use it like other children and be able to go to school when she is old enough."

Vileth is a three-year-old boy from Cambodia. His family lives in a rural province where his father works in a church. His mother farms vegetables around their house and looks after Vileth and his brother. Vileth is a happy child who loves animals, toy cars, and eating Cambodian fish soup. For the past few years, Vileth has had recurrent nasal and ear infections. He experiences difficulty breathing, frequent snoring, and often feels unwell. Over the last month, his mother has noticed that he has developed ear pain and hearing loss. When Vileth's mother learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), they traveled for an hour and a half seeking treatment. On February 8th, doctors will perform a myringotomy procedure to reduce pain and improve his hearing. Now, he and his family need help raising $184 to fund his procedure and care. Vileth's mother shared that she hopes that Vileth's surgery will make him more comfortable and happy.

Felix is a playful 9-year-old, third grade student from Kajiado County, Kenya. His mother is a homemaker while his father works on construction sites. Felix likes playing football despite the limitations he has because of his foot, and he spends most of his time playing with his friends. Felix was born with clubfeet and at the age of 2 weeks, he underwent serial casting and later surgery on both feet at a government hospital near their home. The left foot corrected well, but the right foot recurred. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Having heard about AIC CURE Hospital through CURE's local partner Kajiado Childcare Center, Felix's family brought him to the hospital for review. Felix is currently in the hospital undergoing serial casting and will undergo surgery on November 9th to fix the clubfoot. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,286 to fund Felix's clubfoot repair. After treatment, Felix will be able to walk confidently, play football more easily with friends, and continue with his education without any impediment. “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the donors for the support. May the almighty God continue to bless them and even reach out to more patients who are in need,” Felix's mother told us.

Isaiah is a young husband and father of one. He lives with his family in a single-room rented house in Gachie. Isaiah is the sole breadwinner of the family. He shared that he had hopes of opening a small business for his wife too. Since his accident, Isaiah is unable to work because he uses a motorbike to do his deliveries. The income he earned from the deliveries was very limited and he works hard to support his family. Two weeks ago, Isaiah slipped and fell off a staircase. He landed with his left hand and felt a sharp pain. He went to a nearby hospital, where some scans were done, and he was told that he needed a metal plate put in his hand. He is not able to work and is in severe pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On November 30th, Isaiah will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. After healing, he will be able to work again and to provide for his family. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,500 to fund this procedure. Isaiah says, "It pains me that now I cannot work and provide for my family.”

Perfect is a 28-year-old small-scale farmer. She is a mother of two children who are currently attending primary school. Although she had once dreamed of becoming a nurse, she was unable to pursue this career due to financial difficulties. Instead, she now makes a living by farming on her small plot of land, growing food crops for her family and selling any surplus to generate income. Her husband is a taxi driver, and they live in a small rental house in a trading center. Recently, Perfect came to the doctor with pain in her lower abdomen that radiates to her back. Due to her limited finances, she had initially sought care at a local government clinic, but was advised to seek further treatment at a larger hospital. After seeing our partner's doctor, she underwent a scan which revealed the presence of a bilateral adenexial dermoid cystic mass. She was recommended for cystectomy surgery in order to fully recover, but is unable to afford the cost of the procedure. She is now appealing for support to help her raise the $220 she needs for the surgery. Perfect says, "I think that when I get a chance to undergo surgery, I will be relieved from all this pain. But without your support, I won't be in a position to afford my surgery. I need your support."

Gift is a 23-year-old woman from Uganda. She is the youngest of three siblings, and her parents practice small-scale farming. Gift is married and lives with her husband and in-laws. Gift and her husband also practice small-scale farming, using their produce for family consumption and selling surplus crops at the market. Recently, their sales have decreased due to a drought that has hit their region and negatively impacted the market supply. During Gift’s free time, she enjoys spending time with youth empowerment groups. Gift is currently expecting her second child. She has received a complete antenatal package, and her doctors recommend that she deliver via a cesarean section to ensure the safety of both mother and child. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping Gift undergo a C-section on November 8th. AMH is requesting $252 to fund this procedure. Gift shared, “I appeal for your financial support to undergo this surgery. I will be glad to deliver my baby safely and continue with farming to support my family.”

Getrude is a farmer, a widow, and a mother of five grown children. Her two sons are in small scale business, while her three daughters are married and practice small scale farming themselves. Although Getrude lost her husband 20 years ago, she has been able to raise her children by her small scale farming work. She earns an extra income through weaving mats, but is not in a position to pay her upcoming hospital bill. For three years, Getrude has been experiencing lower abdominal pain and other difficult symptoms. She shared that after suffering unbearable pain, she decided to seek health assistance. She visited Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale, where she was diagnosed with a premalignant cervical lesion. If her condition is not treated, chances are that the lesion may become cancerous. She needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Getrude's surgery. On September 13th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Getrude will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain. Getrude says, “I hope I will get better once I am treated. I wish to continue with farming and sustain my family.”

Editha is the eldest from a family of six children. She lives with her parents, and although she wishes to depend on herself, her condition has made it hard for her. From childhood, Editha has a health condition that causes her to lose consciousness once in a while. Earlier this year, Editha was preparing food when she lost consciousness and fell on the stove and burned her face. She was rushed to the hospital where she received treatment for the open wounds. The wounds healed but left her face impacted. She has been living this way for months because her family did not know that she could be treated and improve her condition. It is hard to open her left eye and due to the burn scars on her face, her self-esteem has been affected. Editha is a brave and resilient young woman, she even had to travel over 1000 km on her own to get to our health center. She requires surgery to help with her face scar condition, but cannot afford to pay for the surgery. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Editha receive treatment. On October 19th, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help her open her eye completely, and live a comfortable life. Now, she needs help to fund this $874 procedure. Editha says, “It has been a while since I was burned but now, I am grateful that there is hope for treatment.”

Bony is a 63-year-old hard-working farmer. She is a mother to seven children. Bony managed to complete primary education, but never proceeded as she was orphaned. She practices farming for a living and loves weaving baskets in her free time, which she sells to earn an additional income. Bony's husband is also a farmer, and they normally grow food crops for their family to eat and sell off the surplus to generate an income for their family. Five years ago, Bony began to experience troubling symptoms, including neck swelling, persistent headaches, protrusion of her eyes, and shortness of breath. She also experiences paralysis in her neck, making it difficult to turn her neck. She was diagnosed with a multinodular goiter and needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Bony receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on June 28th at our medical partner's care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money. Bony says, “I have hopes that I will get better, regain my health and continue with farming once I am given your support to undergo my surgery.”

Phat is a 64-year-old rice farmer. He and his wife have two daughters, three sons, and 13 grandchildren. They live with their youngest son who is a construction worker. Some of his favorite ways to spend his time are listening to the news on the radio and praying at his local pagoda. Two years ago, Phat developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him light sensitivity, eye tearing, and blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on his own. When Phat learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On October 6th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and place an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Phat says, "I hope my vision will improve enough so that I can get around on my own, and can go to the rice field and plant."

Jenipher is a 30-year-old mother who lives with her husband and two children in southwest Uganda. She is a trained nursery school teacher, but she lost her job when schools closed due to Covid. Upon re-opening, she unfortunately could not get her slot with her former employer back, so she now practices small-scale farming. Her husband operates a motorcycle taxi business, earning a daily commission of less than $2. However, she shares that their family is fortunately still able to meet their day-to-day needs. For the past eight years, Jenipher has dealt with an epigastric hernia. She experiences pain around her abdomen, especially when she does strenuous activities. This affects her life greatly because her work is physically demanding. Fortunately, she is scheduled to undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center on August 9th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $230 to fund Jenipher's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow her to live more comfortably and confidently. Jenipher says, “I have hopes that after being operated on I will get better and be relieved from all the pain I have been with for all this time.”

Ivan is a 27-year-old father from Uganda who works doing casual labor, such as washing and loading cars. He currently lives with his mother, who works as a small-scale farmer, in a two-room mud house. For the past two weeks, Ivan has dealt with an inguinal hernia. The hernia is causing him to experience severe pain, as well as a swelling, which is progressively increasing in size. This makes it difficult for him to walk and to continue with his work. In order to alleviate his symptoms, Ivan must undergo hernia repair surgery. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), can help Ivan receive the treatment he needs. On August 23rd, he will undergo hernia repair surgery, which will allow him to live more comfortably and confidently upon recovery. AMH is requesting $170 to cover the cost of Ivan's procedure. Ivan shares, “I pray that I get well after the surgery. I hope to go back to my normal activities that generate my income. I hope to live a normal life after my treatment."
