Phat is a 64-year-old rice farmer. He and his wife have two daughters, three sons, and 13 grandchildren. They live with their youngest son who is a construction worker. Some of his favorite ways to spend his time are listening to the news on the radio and praying at his local pagoda.
Two years ago, Phat developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him light sensitivity, eye tearing, and blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on his own.
When Phat learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On October 6th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and place an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Phat says, “I hope my vision will improve enough so that I can get around on my own, and can go to the rice field and plant.”

Phat underwent cataract surgery for his right eye.
Phat traveled to the Children’s Surgical Centre on the advice of a relative where he received an operation supported by the Watsi community. There were no complications and he was able to return to his province where his sight continued to improve. Phat is relieved that he can be more independent and not afraid to venture outside in the bright sun. He will now be able to manage his farm and spend time with his grandchildren.
Phat said: “The hospital staff were very kind and I felt I was in good hands the whole time. I can see better and am pleased my life will be better because I can keep working to grow rice and through this support my family. Thank you to the staff and the donors who paid for my surgery. I am very happy.”
