Bun is a six-year-old from Cambodia. He has one older sister. He likes to play with his neighbors and watch cartoons. When he grows up he wants to be a teacher in his village. Bun has ptosis in his left eye. Ptosis occurs when the eyelid droops over the eye. He feels uncomfortable when he is at school Bun traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On February 5, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), will perform an eyelid correction procedure to improve his vision. Now, Bun needs help to raise $292 to fund this procedure. His mother says, "I hope my son can feel more comfortable and less shy at school after the surgery."

Moo Htay is a 55-year-old farmer from Burma. She lives with her seven children in Karen State, Burma. Since her husband passed away, the rest of the family works on the farm. They rent land from their neighbor, and sometimes Moo Htay’s children work as day laborers to earn some income. In her free time, she enjoys planting vegetable beside her house. Moo Htay has been diagnosed with a uterine prolapse. She has been advised to undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy, the surgical removal of her uterus and cervix. If left untreated, Moo Htay's symptoms will continue to worsen and put her at risk for further health complications in the future. Fortunately, Moo Htay is scheduled to undergo her hysterectomy on March 15. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to cover the total cost of her procedure and care. Once recovered, she will be able to walk and work normally again. Moo Htay said, “I will return to do farming after I recover from my condition. I plan to plant vegetables beside my house and look after my granddaughter."

Alhaji is a toddler from Tanzania. He is very active and playful. He has not started school yet. Alhaji lives with his mother and one of his brothers in his grandmother’s house. Alhaji’s mother is a small businesswoman who sells onions. Alhaji was diagnosed with bilateral congenital genu varus. His legs are bent. This condition is typically caused by an excessive accumulation of fluoride in the bones, which often stems from contaminated drinking water. As a result, he cannot walk well and experiences pain when he walks long distances. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $940 to fund corrective surgery for Alhaji. The procedure is scheduled to take place on February 9. Treatment will hopefully restore Alhaji's mobility, allow him to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease his risk of future complications. Alhaji’s mother says, “I am happy that Alhaji will receive treatment and I will be very happy to see him attend school and become a doctor one day."

Sophan is a 54-year-old government worker from Cambodia. He loves to read text books and watch TV, especially boxing channels. He has had severe pain in his left hip for over a year, and he is now limping. He has difficulty walking. He can no longer work. His wife is worried about his pain. Fortunately, Sophan learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Sophan of his pain and allow him to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for January 9, and Sophan needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. He says, "After surgery, I hope I can walk pain-free."

Khin is a 41-year-old woman who lives with her family in a village in Burma. She works as a day laborer making jaggery, a kind of sugar, from palm trees. Her eldest son works in a city, while the other children are still in school. Khin became aware of her heart disease several years ago, when a doctor diagnosed her at a private clinic. Khin currently experiences exhaustion, palpitation, and insomnia. This prevents her from working. Four months ago, she was informed that she needed to have surgery. Khin visited our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, and learned about Watsi. She is now scheduled to have surgery on November 3rd. Watsi is requesting $1,500 to help fund her procedure. Khin said, “After I recover from heart surgery, I want to own a small grocery shop."

Maria Nicole is a ten-year-old student from the Philippines who loves to play with her classmates and friends. Maria Nicole was recently diagnosed with malnutrition, a condition that results from consuming too few calories, proteins, and nutrients. Beginning on July 6, Maria Nicole will receive at-home malnutrition treatment through our medical partner, International Care Ministries (ICM). ICM will provide Maria Nicole with nutrient enriched food packs to help her gain weight and achieve optimal physical and mental development. The program will also teach her family about proper nutrition, sanitation, and organic gardening to better care for their daughter. ICM is requesting $173 to cover the cost of Maria Nicole's ongoing care. "I want her to finish her studies and I want her to recover from malnutrition," her mother says.

Baby Lesly lives in rural Guatemala with her family. She loves playing with her doll and rattle. Lesly's parents work hard as tomato farmers to support their family. Lesly has severe stunting as a result of malnutrition. Lesly has little energy to grow and is unable to put on weight. Her weakened immune system puts her at risk of contracting an infection. While malnutrition can have devastating effects, it is also very treatable. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), has enrolled Lesly into a treatment program that is set to begin on March 16. Lesly will be given medication and micronutrient supplements to help her recover. Her condition will be monitored by a nutritionist, and community care workers will teach her parents how to prepare nutrient-rich meals for their daughter. Lesly's parents wish for their daughter to grow up healthy and strong, but they cannot afford to pay for her treatment. WK is requesting $492 in donations to help support Lesly's recovery.

Roeun is a 51-year-old farmer who is married with four sons and three daughters. In his free time, he likes to plant potatoes in his garden, listen to the news on the radio, and go fishing. In January 2017, Roeun fractured his right knee during a fall. He went to a traditional Khmer healer for treatment, but his symptoms did not improve. It is difficult for Roeun to bend his knee, and he is in pain. With his wife, Roeun traveled for eight hours to reach our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, for treatment. On March 20, surgeons will perform an open reduction and internal fixation to realign the fracture back into the normal position. With $411, we can help Roeun walk easily again!

Angela is a one-year-old girl who lives with her older brother and parents in Tanzania. The family lives near a farm, on which they work. While farming, her parents harvest rice, beans, and maize. Angela is fascinated with planes and likes to play with toy planes. Angela’s mother hopes that Angela will become a pilot when she grows up. Angela was recently diagnosed with a post-burn flexion contracture in her right foot and ankle. A contracture is a shortening and hardening of muscles. She also has a contracture of the fifth toe of her right foot. In order to treat Angela's condition, our medical partner, Mission Restore, has scheduled a contracture release and an application of a skin graft for March 31. A amputation of the fifth toe of the right foot may also be necessary. Mission Restore is requesting $1,469 to fund the procedure.

Kem is a 66-year-old grandmother from Cambodia. She is married and has one daughter and two grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys reading. Two years ago, Kem developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurred vision, tearing, and sensitivity to light. Kem has trouble seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and working on her own. When Kem learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for one hour to seek treatment. On March 29, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, Kem will be able to see clearly again. Now, she needs help to fund this $292 procedure.

Lesvia is a 14-month-old baby girl from Guatemala. Her parents are agricultural workers. Lesvia loves eating oranges and playing with her big sister. Lesvia was recently diagnosed with malnutrition. She has little energy to grow, and her immune system is weak and vulnerable to illness. She is also at risk of chronic disease and delayed development. Beginning on February 16, Lesvia will receive treatment at our medical partner's care center, Clinic Tecpán. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is asking for $437 to fund Lesvia's nutritional supplements, medications, and an educational program that will teach her mother how to create a nutrient-rich diet using limited resources. "I am happy now that Lesvia is going to be able to eat better," says Lesvia's mother.

Steven is a 10-year-old fourth grade student from the Dominican Republic. He lives with his mother, brothers, and grandparents. His favorite subject in school is science, and he hopes to be a doctor one day. When not studying, Steven likes to play soccer with his brothers. Steven was was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of his heart. As a result, blood leaks through this hole without first passing through the lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving Steven feeling sickly and weak. On February 7, Steven will visit our medical partner's care center, Hospital Pediatrico Robert Reid Cabral, for a cardiac assessment that includes exams, labs, and an overnight stay at the hospital. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is asking for $1,500 to fund his cardiac assessment, as well as his medications and social support. Gift of Life International is contributing $7,000 to cover additional costs associated with Steven's surgical care. "I am happy to have surgery so that afterward I will be able to run as fast as my oldest brother!" says Steven.
