Divine is 35 years old and a mother of four children from Uganda. She is from Rwanda but grew up in Uganda. After the death of both her parents, her paternal uncle brought her to Uganda so she could benefit from free universal primary education and continue her studies. Divine holds a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. She is a shop attendant, while her husband is a small-scale farmer. Like many mothers, she finds joy in preparing her children for school and caring for her family.
Three years ago, Divine began to experience troubling symptoms, including severe pain due to swelling in the front of her neck. She experiences shortness of breath, excessive sweating, fatigue, and difficulty walking even short distances. The situation worsened when she was diagnosed with hypertension, believed to be secondary to a goiter. She has been to several hospitals without much help. She was diagnosed with a multi-nodular goiter, an abnormal swelling of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck that produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth, and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Divine receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on October 7th, where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money.
Divine says, “The pain I’m going through is too much; there is nowhere they’ve referred me for support that I haven’t gone to, but have always failed. I kindly request your support; otherwise, I don’t think I will be in a position to pay for my surgery.”
