Sam On is a 65-year-old former soldier from Kampong Thom, Cambodia. He lives with his wife, a grocery seller, and their two children. His eldest child helps with household responsibilities, while his youngest child is studying in Grade 7. Since retiring from military service, he has relied on a small government pension to support his family. In his free time, he enjoys watching the news on his phone. In 1997, Sam On stepped on a landmine, resulting in a traumatic injury that required a below-knee amputation of his right leg. Following rehabilitation, he was able to use a prosthetic limb and regain mobility for many years. However, over the past several months, he developed a chronic infected wound at the amputation stump. The wound has produced persistent discharge and caused pain and discomfort, making it difficult for him to wear his prosthetic leg and move around independently. His wife has been caring for the wound at home, but despite her efforts, the infection did not improve. As the condition worsened and began interfering with his daily activities, Sam On sought medical attention and was referred to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, for specialized care. Doctors diagnosed him with an infected right below-knee amputation stump. On June 3rd, Sam On will undergo stump revision surgery, costing $478. The procedure will remove infected tissue, promote healing, relieve pain, and help him use his prosthetic leg comfortably again. Sam On said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to receive treatment. I hope my stump will heal well, the pain and discharge will stop, and I can use my prosthetic leg comfortably again.”

Girdhari is a 35-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from India. He lives with his wife, three children, parents, and siblings. He shares a close bond with his parents and siblings and takes pride in contributing to the household through his work as an auto-rickshaw driver. About a year and a half ago, Girdhari sustained severe burn injuries in a workplace accident. While working as a cook, hot oil spilled onto a stove and triggered a sudden fire, leaving his legs badly burned. He was treated at a local hospital, but did not receive the specialized burn care needed for proper healing. Over time, this has led to serious complications — his feet have developed contractures, leaving them tilted and making walking painful and difficult. Girdhari now requires corrective surgery and rehabilitation to restore function and improve his quality of life. With timely medical intervention, he has a strong chance of regaining better mobility and continuing to support his family. Fortunately, on April 23rd, our medical partner, GS Memorial Plastic Surgery Hospital and Trauma Center, will help Girdhari undergo burn contracture release surgery to restore movement and improve his quality of life. Girdhari is receiving support from G.S. Memorial Trust, but needs help raising $726 more to fund their procedure and care. Girdhari said, "After this surgery, I am hopeful to fully recover and regain my mobility. That way, I can feel confident to seek out more job opportunities to support my family."

Simon is a 69-year-old jovial man from Western Kenya, but currently living in the central region of Kenya. Simon and his wife are separated, and he takes care of their only child, a daughter who is now 17 years old and recently completed secondary school. Simon earns a small income through casual work such as cleaning and weeding flower gardens at a neighbor’s home, which helps him support himself and his daughter. He says that his parents died when he was very young, and as a result, he never received a formal education. Three months ago, Simon began experiencing pain and intermittent swelling on the right side of his inguinal region. Due to lack of finances, he was unable to seek medical care until the pain became unbearable, prompting him to visit the outpatient surgical clinic at Nazareth Hospital. He was referred to undergo an ultrasound that revealed an inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue bulges through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall into the groin. Simon needs surgery to treat the condition, but he's unable to raise the required funds. If left untreated, he will continue to experience pain and may develop complications such as strangulation. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Simon receive treatment. On January 20th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Now, Simon needs help to fund this $517 procedure. "I have no one to turn to; my daughter fully depends on me. I hope to get help so that I can undergo this surgery. I am looking forward to being treated and back to my job, so that I can help my girl, maybe even take her to college," said Simon.
