Innocent is a three-year-old boy from Uganda, the second child in a family of two children. Both his parents work as small-scale farmers, supplementing it with casual labour on other people’s farm for income. The family lives in a small, two-room mud house on a tiny plot of land.
Innocent was brought by his mother to our medical partner’s care center, Ibanda Hospital, with concerns about an umbilical swelling that was increasing in size over time. Upon examination, he was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia, a bulge that appears near the belly button, caused when abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. The medical team has advised that Innocent undergo surgery, but his family is unable to afford the treatment cost.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Innocent receive treatment. On December 4th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center, Uganda Martyr’s Ibanda Hospital. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably. Now, Innocent’s family needs help to fund this $201 procedure.
Innocent’s mother says, “I have been very worried about the condition of my son and the finances for the operation. However, I thank the doctor for connecting me to the Watsi program for the support, and I hope the surgery will be successful. I will continue practicing farming and work hard to care for my children.’’
