Two year-old Derrick is currently living with malnutrition. His symptoms include oedema, fever, diarrhea, and skin lesions. His doctors also noted that he is struggling with walking.
Derrick lives with his mother, Jackilin, in a village about 50km from the Bwindi Community Hospital in Uganda. The community nurse found Derrick suffering and recommended his mother bring him there. Jackilin’s husband left two years ago and she has not heard from him since or received any help. She works as a farm laborer to support her son, and makes small amounts of extra money weaving mats.
While Derrick is being treated for malnutrition, Jackilin will also receive nutritional counseling and learn how to use local foods to make the nutritious foods that Derrick needs to grow. This comprehensive treatment and education costs $375.
When he is feeling well, Derrick enjoys playing with dolls and his favorite food is millet porridge. Jackilin enjoys playing with him and loves to see him laugh. She hopes he will have good health and get an education.
