This is Leak, a 14-year-old Cambodian girl who is in the eighth grade. She has three sisters and three brothers. When she isn’t in school, Leak enjoys cooking, reading books, and watching Thai movies that have been translated into Khmer.
In May of this year, 14-year-old Leak fell from a tree. The fall dislocated and fractured her left elbow. She received treatment in the form of Khmer traditional medicine for five weeks, but her arm still did not heal. Currently, she can't use her left arm to hold anything, and she is in pain every day.
Eventually, Leak and her father traveled three hours to reach the Children’s Surgical Centre. There, doctors told her she needs to undergo an operation known as open reduction internal fixation. In this procedure, surgeons will make an incision and realign the fractured bones in Leak’s elbow. They will then fix the realigned bones in place using a screw or other device to ensure that her elbow heals correctly.
On their own, Leak’s family cannot afford to pay for this procedure. But for $405, we can sponsor it. This sum will also cover the two-week hospital stay and five days of physical therapy Leak will need in order to recuperate fully from the operation.
After she recovers from this surgery, Leak will be able to use her left arm without trouble. Let’s help this teenager leave pain behind.
