Jonah is 52 years old and a farmer from Uganda. She and her husband engage in small-scale farming to support their five children. Her husband supplements their income through brickmaking. About one year ago, Jonah began to experience troubling symptoms, including a swelling on the front of her neck. Over time, she began experiencing shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, pain when swallowing, and a persistent, irritating cough-like sensation. Her condition gradually worsened, reaching a point where she could no longer lie down comfortably to rest. Jonah was diagnosed with a goitre, which is an abnormal swelling of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth, and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Jonah receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on November 2nd. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money. Jonah says, “I was excited to know of your support, and I believe that with it, I will be operated on and will surely get better.”

Pheareak is a 39-year-old grocery seller from Cambodia. He lives in Kandal Province with his elderly parents and four siblings. He is the third of five children. His older brother is a chef, his older sister sells vegetables, his younger brother works for a company, and his youngest sister stays at home. In his free time, he enjoys listening to music and watching the news on his phone In 2015, Pheareak was involved in a motor vehicle accident that caused a fracture of his left femur. He underwent several procedures to repair the fracture, including fixation and later revision surgery. Unfortunately, the fracture became complicated by an infection, requiring further treatment with the help of our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). After recovering, he was able to walk well and continued with his daily life for several years. Two months ago, Pheareak began experiencing increasing pain in his left thigh and knee after trying to bend his knee. His left leg gradually became weaker, and he eventually lost the ability to walk. He now relies on a wheelchair and has limited movement in his left knee. A recent X-ray revealed another fracture of his left femur. Fortunately, CSC can help Pheareak. On September 1st, Pheareak will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will stabilize and realign his left femur and give the bone a better chance to heal, helping him regain strength and mobility so he can walk and return to his normal daily activities. His family can contribute $1000, but needs help raising $500 more to fund his procedure and care. Pheareak said, “I hope this surgery will help my leg heal properly and allow me to walk again without pain. I want to regain my strength and return to my normal daily activities.”

Debelo is 65-year-old farmer from Ethiopia, who has spent most of his life working on his land alongside his wife, to raise their six children. Debelo has always taken pride in providing for his family through hard physical work. Over the last year, however, a health problem has worn down his strength and independence. About a year ago, Debelo started experiencing an urgent and frequent need to pass urine, but difficulty in passing urine. The symptoms were especially worse at night. This has made his daily work exhausting, turning a job he used to care about into a daily struggle. The illness has affected other parts of his life as well, including social and community engagement. Debelo has been with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland. Physicians at Saglan Wajee General Hospital determined that he should undergo surgery treatment. Our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, is requesting $900 to fund the procedure, which is scheduled to take place on August 23rd. This procedure will significantly improve Debelo's quality of life. Debelo said, "I just need to be healthy again. It has been a whole year of dealing with pain when I try to pass urine, and when I try to do anything. I just wish to be able to work and take care of my family financially, again."
