Annah is a 30-year-old mother from Uganda. She is married with four children and is expecting her fifth! Annah and her husband, Charles, work as small farmers growing food for their own consumption. They also farm for others to earn an income. Less than a year ago, Annah gave birth via C-section due to her cervical dystocia. With this upcoming delivery, doctors are expecting her to need another C-section. Beginning on June 22, Annah will be monitored at our medical partner's care center, Bwindi Community Hospital. Our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, is asking for $241 to fund her treatment and ensure she has a safe delivery. Annah and her husband have contributed $7 towards her care. “It is a great blessing to have this help," says Annah. "I thank all the donors for their support.” After delivery, Annah looks forward to nursing her baby and returning to gardening.

Flavio lives in a humble home in a remote village in the mountains of Guatemala. He used to work as a farmer, but now he is unable to see and cannot do it anymore, even though he is still very physically active. Flavio is an incredibly selfless father and grandfather. He has five children, and 21 grandchildren who all live with him and his wife in their small home. One of his daughters has special needs, so he spends most of his days taking care of her since he is unable to work on their plot of land anymore. Flavio has cataracts in both his eyes, which have been bothering him for as long as he can remember. In the past couple years, he has not been able to even go to the corner store without help, because he is not able to tell apart the different bills and coins. This makes him frustrated. He lacks the independence to do even simple things on his own, but he wants to be more helpful to his family. Surgical treatment will give Flavio the independence that he has been craving--he will no longer be held back by his poor vision. He will be able to go to the store on his own, and maybe even help out on the farm once his vision is repaired--giving him another chance to do all of his favorite things that he hasn't been able to do for years. Flavio shares, "I am happy because my vision is going to get better. When I can see better I will be able to continue working and walking around my village without having problems."

Bright is a 32-year-old, single father of three from Uganda. He works as a laborer, making bricks and working in fields. Bright is most happy when he is with his kids, and when he is at peace with his neighbors. Two years ago, Bright started feeling pain in the upper abdomen after meals, and later developed swelling in the same area. Due to the pain, he is unable to lift heavy items, walk long distances, or eat enough food. He visited a hospital where he was diagnosed with a hernia. He was advised to have surgery, but he could not afford to pay for it. If left untreated, Bright will continue to experience pain and other potential complications. For $249, Bright is able to undergo hernia repair surgery. After surgery, he hopes to continue digging and making bricks to sell in order to take care of his children. “My children are my priority. How I wish I could take good care of them,” Bright shares.

Sungani is a 74-year-old farmer from central Malawi. He and his wife live close to their four adult children and six grandchildren. In his free time, Sungani enjoys chatting with his friends. For the past two years, Sungani has been experiencing pain due to an umbilical hernia. The pain has interfered with Sungani's ability to work and perform other daily tasks. An umbilical hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine protrudes through the umbilical opening in the abdominal muscles, presenting as a soft swelling or bulge near the navel (umbilicus). In some cases, the hernia can be gently pushed back into the abdomen. However, in other cases, a segment of the intestine or abdominal fat becomes trapped in the hernia and cannot slide back into the abdomen. Without treatment, blood supply to the tissue may be reduced, causing severe complications. Until now, Sungani has been unable to receive quality treatment to repair his hernia. For $327, Sungani will undergo hernia repair. During the surgery, the doctor will push the protruding tissue back into the abdomen and sew together the weakened muscle with a synthetic mesh. Over time, muscle tissue will grow into and around the mesh to strengthen the area. Funding for Sungani also covers the costs of a six-day hospital stay, pain medicine, blood tests, and one follow-up consultation after surgery. Sungani and his family look forward to his return to his normal daily life, pain-free. Let's help make that happen!

Six-year-old Kabi lives in Nepal with his parents and siblings. His family sustains themselves by farming, and the yield from working the field is enough to support them for about six months of the year. One day when Kabi was playing with his friends, he was pushed to the ground and fell on a rock, breaking his left hand. Since then it has been causing him a significant amount of pain, and has gotten considerably swollen as well. He needs help with his everyday tasks-- even just eating and getting dressed. After being taken to the local health post near his village, Kabi was referred to Possible for a surgical treatment. He traveled nearly seven hours walking with his family to reach the hospital from his house. For $541, doctors will perform surgery to reposition the bones in his wrist and hand. Then his arm will be kept fixed in a cast for several weeks while the bones heal in their proper place. After surgery, Kalbi will also receive physiotherapy sessions where his parents will learn exercises to help him regain full function in his arm. Even though it may be difficult for him in the beginning, these exercises are important for him to have a full and speedy recovery. Kalbi's family is very excited for him to receive surgery. "I'm so glad that Kabi is getting his treatment soon," shares his father.

“I want to get well and be there for my children," shares Miriam, a 40-year-old mother of two children. Miriam and her children, a boy in grade three and a girl in grade two, live in urban Kenya. She works at a small grocery shop while her partner operates a taxi cab. Together, Miriam and her partner split the rent for a two-roomed house and Miriam is able to meet her son's school fees. In January 2016, Miriam felt a lump on her left breast and began to complain of pain on her left hand. At the original hospital she visited, the x-ray images did not present a clear diagnosis. In May, Miriam visited Watsi's medical partner. After several examinations, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was told that she needed a mastectomy, a surgery to remove all breast tissue from a breast as a way to treat or prevent breast cancer. Without treatment, Miriam's cancer might spread to other parts of her body which would further complicate her health life and result in premature death. Despite her sister and parents being out of work, Miriam's family and friends were able to subsidize $208 of the cost of her surgery. The remaining $740 will be funded by the generous support of Watsi donors. Surgery will allow Miriam to regain her health, return to work, and continue providing for her children.
