Keanin lives in Cambodia with his wife and two young children. As a family, they enjoy listening to music and playing various sports. Both he and his wife work on their land farming rice. Keanin mentioned he would also like to start growing vegetables, but does not have the space currently. When it is rice harvest season, they keep half of the rice for cooking, and they sell the other half to support the family. When there is not much to be done in the rice field, Keanin does short-term work where he collects wood and branches from the nearby area, puts them through a wood chipper, and sells the wood chips to a local company. Around four months ago, the lid of the wood chipping machine became loose and hit Keanin in the right knee, causing a major laceration. He was rushed to a nearby hospital to stop the bleeding. He was then advised to go four hours to Phnom Penh for surgery to repair a damaged artery. Unfortunately, the artery repair was unsuccessful, and Keanin needed an amputation of his leg. Last week, the doctor from a prosthetics and orthotics organization contacted him to come in to fit his new prosthetic leg. However, when he tried to put the prosthetic on, he felt sharp pain and was unable to wear it. The doctor referred him to Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) for a consultation and to see if our partner medical team could help. Keanin needs a stump revision procedure to modify the nerve causing him pain. This will ease his pain, and make it possible to wear his new leg. Our partner CSC is requesting $391 to fund the surgery. Keanin shared, "I hope I can not be in pain and wear the prosthetic leg and be more comfortable. Then I can go back to working to support my family."

Sary is a 34-year-old man who was born and raised in the capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His mom has always worked as a cleaner, and his dad is a vegetable farmer. Sary currently lives with his younger brother but hasn't been able to work in years due to his deteriorating condition. He enjoys watching Cambodian comedy shows on television and spending time with his brother. From the age of 12, Sary and his parents noticed his spine was curved. By the age of 20, he lost some function in his right hand. He did not seek treatment due to fear of the costs. Since that time, the condition has worsened. He experiences back pain, ankle pain, and weakness in his right leg and arm. He needs a scoliosis corrective surgery to improve his function and decrease pain. He has presented to our medical partner Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) to seek intervention for his disability. Surgeons plan to do a spinal fusion with implants on August 3rd. Sary was able to contribute $100 to the cost of the surgery and needs help with the remaining $1,500, which will cover the costs of radiology, medications, surgery, and post-op physiotherapy care. Sary shared, "I hope I can walk better, not have pain, and help my brother at home."

Edvina is an elderly woman from Uganda. She did not attend school and shares there was no education at that time. She delivered nine children altogether, but only six are alive and are all married. She can no longer go to the fields for farming because of her old age and is taken care of by her children. She stays in a three-room mud house with three of her grandchildren. For five years, Edvina has had an abdominal hernia. She reports having a small swelling above her umbilicus, but her family thought that she had gastric ulcers. She was unable to eat comfortably. She visited a couple of hospitals without finding the right diagnosis and would be discharged on painkillers. Her son reports that she has now completely lost her appetite and feels uncomfortable most of the time. At Rushoroza Hospital, surgery has been recommended but her children cannot afford it. Fortunately, on September 15, she will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $170 to fund Edvina's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will allow her to live more comfortably and confidently. Edivina says, “I hope to get well through surgery so that I may live the remaining part of my life comfortable and peaceful.”
