Tabiya is a 45-year-old mother of two children from Malawi. Her husband is a casual worker, while she cooks and sells donuts for income. Tabiya derives much pleasure in baking, and her favorite meal is chips and chicken.
For the past four years, Tabiya has had a hard mass on the right side of her abdomen. Initially, she did not experience any pain and was advised by some of her female friends that it was likely a sign of pregnancy. Over time, however, she began experiencing some troubling symptoms including pain, backaches, prolonged heavy bleeding, body weakness, and numbness where the mass was located. She decided to seek a medical consultation at our medical partner’s care facility, Partners in Hope Medical Center.
A series of tests were conducted, and Tabiya was diagnosed with uterine fibroids and advised to undergo a hysterectomy, a surgical removal of her uterus.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Tabiya receive treatment. On April 4th, she will undergo the surgery and once recovered, Tabiya will be able to resume her daily activities free from pain. She and her family are able to contribute towards the cost of his treatment, but need help raising $1,363 more to fund the procedure.
Tabiya says, “The pain has become unbearable and has affected my work. I am hopeful that after surgery, I will recover and be able to fulfill my responsibilities as a supportive mother to my family.”
