Maly is a 56-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She lives with her elderly mother, and grows rice for a living. In her free time, Maly enjoys planting vegetables around her home. About six years ago, Maly was involved in a motorcycle accident, causing a severe injury to her right leg. She underwent several procedures, but currently her right ankle remains fused in an equinus position, causing pain in her right toes, and making it difficult to put weight on her foot. She currently walks in crutches, and has difficulty moving around independently. When Maly learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for 4 hours seeking treatment. On September 8th, surgeons at CSC will perform a joint arthrodesis procedure to improve the position and stability of her foot, reduce pain, and help her walk more comfortably. Maly is able to contribute towards the cost of her treatment, but needs help raising $536 more to fund the procedure. She says, “I hope this surgery will reduce the pain in my right foot and help me walk more comfortably, without depending so much on crutches. I wish to be able to move around more independently, and return to my daily activities.”

Maria is a 28-year-old woman from Uganda. Maria has spent years trying to rebuild her life after losing her only child and undergoing two major abdominal operations. Today, she runs a small soft-drinks business to support herself and help care for her sister’s two children. She operates this business out of her own home. However, a painful swelling on her abdomen has begun interfering with the very business she depends on to survive. Maria underwent two abdominal operations, the first four years ago and the last one year ago. But for the past eight months, Maria continues to experience a painful swelling around her navel at the site of her previous abdominal surgery. The pain becomes particularly troublesome when she sits for long periods, laughs, or speaks. She has not received treatment for the swelling, and it has increasingly affected her ability to attend to her customers. At times, the pain becomes so severe that she has to close her business, losing the little income she depends on. On November 3rd, Maria will undergo hernia repair surgery with the help of our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare. This procedure and care will cost $170, and Maria needs your help. Maria shares, “I have gone through two major operations, and the money I spent on treatment left me with almost nothing. Now I have this painful swelling, and sometimes I have to close my business because I cannot bear the pain. I depend on this small business to survive and to help care for my sister’s children, but I cannot afford another operation. I kindly appeal to the donors to help me receive the surgery I need. Your assistance would give me a chance to recover, return to my business, and continue caring for the children who depend on me. Cheata is an 11-year-old Grade 6 student from Cambodia. She is the third of five children and lives with her parents, who are rice farmers. All of her siblings are still students. She enjoys mathematics at school, likes drawing pictures in her free time, and loves eating caramelized pork and eggs. Cheata has had a mass at the back of her right thigh for about three years. She has multiple osteochondromas, with bony growths around her right femur, including areas near the front-inner and back-outer parts of the lower thigh bone. The growths have gradually increased in size and cause mild pain and discomfort around her right knee. She sometimes feels a grinding or snapping sensation when squatting, which can make knee movement uncomfortable. Cheata traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On September 15th, surgeons at Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) will remove the mass. Now, Cheata needs help to raise $344 to fund this procedure. Cheata's mother said, “I hope removing these growths will help my daughter feel less pain and move her right leg more comfortably. I am also relieved that she can receive treatment now, and I hope she will be able to squat, walk, and enjoy her daily activities without the discomfort she has been experiencing.”
