“I have not been able to attend school for almost a year because of my condition. I hope to go back to school next year,” says Virginia. Meet Virginia, a 12-year-old girl from Kenya. She lives with her grandmother, 3 siblings and 5 cousins while her mother is away for work.
Virginia has osteomyelitis in her right leg, which is a bone infection that causes pain and an inability to walk without support. She has already had five surgeries within the last two years. Her family has done all they can to support her but they are unable to afford her next surgery. If left untreated, our partners at the African Mission Healthcare Foundation tell us, “the infection may worsen and lead to an amputation.”
For $660, Virginia can receive her much needed surgery to remove the infection, allow her to walk pain free, and she will be able to go back to school.
