Saulos is a 73-year-old elderly man from Malawi. Years back, he stepped away from active farming when his hands grew too weak to manage the work. Life has slowed since then. He and his wife now depend on their children, who farm on their behalf to make sure food reaches the household. Saulos still finds small ways to stay useful. Each morning, he rises early to care for a few chickens kept in their compound, raised for eggs and manure. It is modest work, but it gives structure to his days.
One morning in December 2025, that routine was suddenly broken. As Saulos stepped onto the veranda at the back of his home to attend to the chickens, he slipped and fell. The pain was immediate and severe. He knew something was wrong with his left leg and could not stand. His wife called out for their son, who lives with them in the same compound, and together they rushed him to our medical partner’s care center, Nkhoma Mission Hospital, just a 15-minute drive away. X-rays confirmed a kneecap fracture. Saulos was admitted for a few days and then discharged with instructions to return in January 2026, for further assessment. When he returned, doctors explained that surgery, open reduction and internal fixation, was necessary for proper healing. The news brought worry to the family, who were unsure how they would manage the cost. One of Saulos’s children managed to send $57.14 to contribute toward the bill, but it was not enough to cover the full treatment.
Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, can help. On January 13th, Saulos will undergo a fracture repair procedure at Nkhoma hospital. This procedure will help him walk easily again, return home able to move again and be free from constant pain. Our medical partner is requesting $636 to cover the cost of treatment.
Saulos said “My wife and children have done everything for me since the fall. I hope the surgery will allow me to walk and not depend on them for every small thing.”
