Lang is a 57-year-old rice farmer from Prey Veng province in Cambodia. She is married and has one son, one daughter, and three grandchildren. She and her husband live with their daughter, who is still in school. Lang's husband works on the farm with her and he also drives a moto-taxi to make ends meet. Five years ago, Lang developed a pterygium in her left eye. As a result, she now experiences itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. Her progressive vision loss makes it difficult for her to watch her favorite shows and she is embarrassed by the way her eye looks. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sunlight, which causes cells to grow abnormally over the pupil. When Lang learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours, hoping to receive treatment. On May 4th, Lang will undergo a surgical procedure at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. During the procedure, the abnormal conjunctiva will be removed from the surface of the cornea and replaced with a conjunctival graft, which should prevent a recurrence. The total cost of her procedure is $225, which will cover the medications, supplies, and inpatient care for two days. Lang needs your help to fund her procedure. Lang said: "I hope after surgery the irritation and tearing in my eye will stop, and I can go back to growing rice and doing housework."

Corinelio is a tall, humble, patient and determined man. He is married and a father to one son and six daughters. All of his children are in school. Corinelio loved school, but his parents did not have enough money to pay his school fees, so he only managed to complete primary class seven. Corinelio supports his family from small-scale farming with his wife. However, they have limited land, and mostly grow what is needed to feed the family, selling any surplus to generate an income for the family. For three years, Corinelio has suffered with a left inguinal hernia, a condition where abdominal tissue bulges through a weak spot in the groin area. The swelling is more visible when Corinelio stands for a prolonged time, does a strenuous activity like cultivating, or when he coughs or laughs. Fortunately, on September 5th, Corinelio will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $230 to fund the surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow Corinelio to live more comfortably and confidently. Corinelio says, “I hope to get healed once I am given your support and expect a full recovery from this pain I’ve had for a long time.”

Judith is a small-scale farmer from Uganda. When she was young, she was in school only up to the 7th grade due to limited financial support from her parents. She now does farming together with her husband and it is through the sale of their farm produce that they are able to pay school fees for their three children. They live in a three-room mud house that was given to them by her father-in-law. Six years ago, Judith began to experience neck swelling that was noticed by her friends. They advised her to use herbs but that did not help. The swelling is painless except when she touches it. She has mild airway obstruction especially when she walks up the hill and when singing in church, which she loves to do. Last year she visited a doctor at Kabale Referral Hospital to seek treatment. Judith was diagnosed with a multi-nodular goiter and needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Judith receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on September 22 at our medical partner's care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $333, and she and her family need help raising money. Judith says, “I believe that I will be singing in church comfortably again one day soon and hope to be able to proceed with farming for my family’s survival.”
