Oscar is a 28-year-old married man from a village in Lilongwe District in Malawi. He has a young child who is not yet of school age, and relies on small-scale farming to support the family by growing maize, groundnuts, and keeping livestock. One year ago, Oscar noticed an itch in his throat and a slight hoarseness in his voice, initially thinking he was developing a cough. However, he later discovered a small painful swelling that has been gradually getting larger. He did not seek medical help as he had no funds to pay for treatment until his mother heard about a care program when she visited our medical partner care center, Nkhoma Hospital. Oscar was diagnosed with goiter, and was scheduled to undergo thyroidectomy surgery. The condition has negatively affected his life as the swelling is painful and sometimes, he experiences shortness of breath. Treatment will relieve him of these symptoms, improving the quality of his life. Fortunately, our medical partner African Mission Healthcare is helping Oscar receive treatment at their care center. On March 7th surgeons will perform thyroid surgery so he can regain his health. Now, he needs help to fund this $491 procedure. Thein is a seven-year-old student from Burma. She lives with her mother and grandfather and is currently a first-grade student. Her father works as a driver at a toy factory in Bangkok and Thein’s mother stays home to care for her. The family relies on her father’s income, which is enough to cover their daily expenses. They are able to pay for basic healthcare, but they cannot afford expensive treatment costs. During her free time, Thein enjoys helping her mother with household chores. Currently, Thein faces difficulty seeing objects clearly, requiring the use of thick eyeglasses. Additionally, she must sit in the front row of the classroom, near the blackboard, to follow her teachers’ lesson. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to fund lens replacement surgery for Thein. On February 16th, doctors will perform a lens replacement, during which they will remove Thein's natural lenses and replace them with an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she and her family need help to fund this $1,500 procedure. Thein’s mother said, “Thank you [BCMF and donors] for helping my daughter to get a good and clear vision. I pray for the donors to have wealthy lives and continue helping others.” Thein also said, “I want to be a teacher when I grow up and thanks for your help.”

Sotey is a 16-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives with his grandparents and his younger brother. His grandparents work as rice farmers, and his parents work on a pig farm just over the Thai border. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Sotey has been attending a school for children with disabilities for the last several years. Inspired by his teachers, he would like to become a teacher and work at the school in the future. Sotey likes reading in his free time and eating his grandmother's amazing chicken soup! About one month ago, Sotey had a fall and dislocated his left hip. Before the fall, he could walk independently, with intermittent use of a walker. For the last month since the accident, he has been in a wheelchair due to pain and frequent falling when attempting to stand. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), can help. On March 6th, Sotey will undergo a fracture repair procedure to help him walk again. CSC is requesting $483 to fund this surgery. Sotey contributed $100 to his care. Sotey's teacher accompanied him on the six-hour journey to CSC. She shared with our team: "I hope he can stand on his own again. We want him to feel happiness about the future."
