“Kyamukama presented with left inguinal swelling for two years with on and off pain,” our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), tells us.
The 50-year-old father of four from Uganda has had occasional sharp pain in his groin area. He is at risk of developing intestinal blockage and an incarcerated hernia, which occurs when the hernia becomes strangulated.
Kyamukama earns his living by selling firewood and banana leaves. He has not been able to continue his work in the past few months as he is unable to split firewood and carry the leaves to the market with his condition.
“I have pain but my income is too little to support all my family’s needs,” Kyamukama says. In the previous two years, he had never visited a hospital as he knew he could not afford to pay for the treatment. The $220 will cover the cost of his hernia repair surgery, and will eliminate the risk of intestinal blockage and incarceration.
“After surgery Kyamukama hopes to regain his energy and continue his business so that he can be able to support his family,” AMHF shares.
