Amina is a 55-year-old woman living in Kenya. A widow and a mother of five, she worked very hard selling fried potatoes on the streets to provide for her family, and now lives with her daughter and two grandchildren.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), tells us, “Amina has a lump in her left breast. A recent biopsy showed that the lump is cancerous. Amina experiences weakness in her left hand and this has caused her to stop working. She is unable to lift her hand high above her head due to pain, and cannot lift heavy objects.”
If left untreated, Amina’s cancer could spread throughout her body, which puts her at risk of further health complications, including death. However, for $740, she will receive mastectomy—a surgery to remove the lump – and subsequent chemo/radiotherapy.
After treatment, Amina can expect to be cancer-free and regain full use of her left hand.
“My hand is very weak,” says Amina. “If I could work again, I would be able to help my daughter more.”
