Sun is a 68-year-old rice farmer from Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia. She has one daughter, two sons, and six grandchildren. She lives with her husband and their youngest son, who also works in the rice fields. Around two years ago, Sun developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. As a result, Sun has difficulty seeing things clearly, and is limited in her ability to go out on her own. Fortunately, our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is here to help. On July 3rd, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and implant an intraocular lens in Sun's left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly and regain her independence. Sun's family is able to contribute $100 but needs help to raise $153 more for this procedure. Sun shared, "I hope I can see more clearly and go back to work. I want to be able to recognize my grandchildren and help more around the house."

Amaani is 16 months old and is the only child of his parents. Amaani's father was unable to care for Amaani as a baby as he was still in school. Amaani was raised by his grandmother so that his father can continue his schooling. Amaani's father completed university last year and is currently searching for a job with hopes to be able to provide for his young family. Since January 2024, Amaani has had a recurring hernia. He underwent a herniotomy on his left side, but now needs surgery on his right side. Amaani is in pain, unable to eat well or play with other children. Fortunately, on July 23rd, Amaani will undergo surgery. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $201 to fund this procedure that will help relieve him of pain and allow him to live more comfortably as he grows. Amaani's grandmother says, "I have hopes that he will have a successful surgery and he will be able to join fellow children and play without pain."

Chen is a 29-year-old construction worker living with his grandmother and extended family in Kampong Chhnang province in Cambodia. Chen's two younger siblings are still in school, while his mother, who is divorced from their father, works in a factory in Thailand. A year ago, Chen was in a road traffic accident where he was hit by another motorbike. This resulted in an open fracture of his right leg. Chen was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery to stabilize his tibia and femur. The cost of his hospitalization was over $4,000 and Chen has run out of money and can no longer pay the hospital fees where he is being treated. His fractures have not healed, he is unable to walk without crutches, and he is in chronic pain. In addition, the nerves in his leg have been permanently damaged. He experiences a drop foot and a loss of sensation. The tibial external fixation site has become infected and Chen lives in great discomfort. Although the surgeons had hoped to save his leg, it was determined that he needs an amputation. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On May 16th, Chen will undergo an amputation at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre to rid his leg of the chronic infection, reduce Chen's pain, and eventually improve his mobility with a prosthesis. Chen is able to contribute $100 but needs help to raise $379 more to fund the procedure. After surgery, Chen hopes he will be able to walk easily again and return to work.
