Devota is a nine-year-old primary school student from Tanzania, the eldest child in a family of three children. Her father, the family’s sole breadwinner, describes her as being very responsible, often taking care of her younger siblings. Devota’s father works as a small-scale farmer and is also employed as a groundskeeper, while her mother is a homemaker.
Devota was diagnosed with bilateral varus, a condition in which legs bow outward. Several factors could cause this condition, such as growth disorders, vitamin deficiencies, or excessive fluoride found in contaminated drinking water. As a result, the knees can be angled inwards or outwards, making it difficult to walk and may cause long-term joint damage.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $810 to fund treatment for Devota. The procedure scheduled to take place on December 3rd will hopefully restore Devota’s mobility, allowing her to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease her risk of future complications.
Devota’s father says: “I hope my daughter will be able to walk comfortably and attend school without difficulty.”
