“I just want to be with my children, and see them grow, and be happy together,” says Ofelia, a 37-year-old woman, wife, and mother from Guatemala.
Three months ago Ofelia was diagnosed with lymphoma. “She managed to get herself started on chemotherapy, but this has required taking on large amounts of debt,” Wuqu’ Kawoq’ (WK) tells us. “Now, although she is responding well to chemotherapy, she is going to stop treatment unless she gets financial help because she simply can’t afford it.”
“Ofelia personally knows another cancer patient that was helped (and cured) by Watsi funding, and she has come to us hoping for help,” WK continues.
Ofelia and her husband have four children under the age of ten. With $1475 and expertise from the WK team, we can help Ofelia continue her chemo, remain in remission, and be well enough to care for her loved ones for years to come.

Ofelia received cancer treatment.
We are deeply saddened to report that Ofelia passed away due to complications following her procedure.
“Ofelia was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma and needed urgent help,” her doctor at Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK) tells us. “After chemotherapy funded by Watsi donors, her disease went into remission. The swelling in her glands went away and she recovered her energy and was able to enjoy time with her family. Unfortunately, however, about a month later she developed some pain in her abdomen. We performed scans and found a large tumor in her liver. This was actually liver cancer, not a lymphoma, so Ofelia unfortunately had the misfortune of having a second cancer develop while she was still being treated for another one.”
“Because of her weakened state from just recovering from lymphoma treatment, she was unable to undergo aggressive treatment for liver cancer, and so we transitioned her to palliative care, with the support of her family,” continues WK. “She spent her final weeks at home, comfortable and surrounded by loved ones. We regret to inform our Watsi donors that Ofelia past away on Wednesday, May 22nd at 10:30am, but are proud to have been a part of making her final months pleasant ones and being able to support her and her family at the end.”
“She was an extremely strong and resilient woman,” Ofelia’s complex care aide at WK shares. “She fought every day to live. She wanted to see her children grow up and she was filled with so much hope. She will be missed.”
We are heartbroken to share this news, but we are committed to transparently reporting all outcomes to you - even the ones we wish were different.
Thank you for making it possible for Ofelia to access the care she needed.
