Nyza is a 12-year-old girl from Cambodia, who lives with her parents and two brothers in Prey Veng province. Nyza’s mother works as a home tailor and her father is a truck driver. Nyza is in grade 7 and enjoys studying mathematics and science. In her free time, she loves playing with her baby nephew, and watching TV.
Nyza was born with congenital scoliosis, a spinal condition that causes an abnormal curvature of the spine. It is difficult for Nyza to walk, stand, and maintain a normal posture. She also finds it difficult to sit at school and cannot focus on her studies.
Nyza and her family traveled to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) to seek treatment. On September 5th, Nyza will have surgery to improve spine alignment. This procedure helps correct curvature by fusing the vertebrae together with metalwork to stabilize the spine and prevent further deformity and pain. Nyza’s family can afford $100 toward her care, and need your help to raise the remaining $1,400 for the surgery, hospitalization, post-operative medication, and physiotherapy.
Nyza shared, “I wish to have improved posture so I can focus on my studies and play with my family members more easily.”

We are incredibly grateful to share some wonderful updates about Nyza’s progress! She received exceptional care from specialized surgeons who worked diligently to improve her spine, stabilizing and correcting its curvature to allow her bones to grow properly and create a strong foundation for her recovery.
Nyza has now started working closely with the rehabilitation team. They have been guiding her as she learns to use crutches and helps her build strength through various exercises. While it may take four to six weeks to ease back into simple activities, Nyza is filled with relief knowing she can breathe easier and will no longer feel self-conscious about her height or how her clothes fit.
Nyza expressed, “I hope to be able to stand like my friends and focus on my studies. Thank you to the supporters, the doctors and the nurses who took such good care of me.”
