Virigiria is a 65-year-old farmer from Uganda. Born into a family of six children, she did not advance past primary school and was pressured into marriage at 18 years. Unfortunately, her husband passed away a few years after, and she raised their two children, who now have their own families. Presently, she lives with two of her granddaughters and grows food crops for home consumption, occasionally selling the surplus to generate income.
For two years, Virigiria has been experiencing lower abdominal pain, backache, and other uncomfortable gynecological symptoms. She initially visited a local health center where she was examined and advised to see a gynecologist. She traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Karoli Lwanga Hospital for examination, and was diagnosed with degenerative uterine myomas, which are non-cancerous tumors that grow on or in the muscular walls of the uterus. The doctors have recommended a total abdominal hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. Unfortunately, she is unable to raise the funds needed for her surgery and is therefore seeking support.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Virigiria receive treatment. On December 4th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at Karoli Lwanga Hospital. Once recovered, Virigiria will be able to resume her daily activities free of her painful symptoms. Now, Virigiria needs help to fund this $219 procedure.
She says, “Sometimes the pain lasts for more than two days and is unresponsive to painkillers. I kindly seek your support so I can undergo surgery, as I am not able to raise the required funds on my own.”
