Jane is a 65-year-old farmer from Kenya. She lives in a 3 room house that is built on their ancestral home in South Kinangop. Her husband passed on in 2004. Together, they had 4 children, all of whom are now adults. Jane does small scale farming mainly for home use, and does not have a source of income. Currently, none of her children have stable employment, and are unable to financially support Jane for the care that she needs. Jane has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Without treatment, the cancer may spread to other organs. A mastectomy, a surgery to remove breast tissue, has been suggested to rid her body of breast cancer and to prevent the cancer from metastasizing. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $857 to cover the cost of a mastectomy for Jane. The procedure is scheduled to take place on December 9th. After treatment, Jane will hopefully return to a cancer-free life. Jane shared, "I thought the itching on my breast was just normal but I was wrong. It has turned out to be cancer which I know can cause death if not controlled. Doctors say I need this surgery to help stop its spread, but I know I cannot afford it."

Srey Nuch is a second-grade student from Cambodia. She has two older brothers, and one older sister. She often enjoys playing games with her friends and watching television and reading books when her classes finish. One year ago, Srey Nuch had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her right ear to perforate. For this reason, Srey Nuch experiences pain, discharge, tinnitus, and hearing loss. She has a difficult time hearing others, and cannot listen well in class. Srey Nuch traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On February 3rd, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her right ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $464 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. "I hope that my daughter's surgery will go well so that she can feel better again and I won't have to worry about her ears anymore." -Srey Nuch's Mother

Sitha is a 44-year-old market seller from Cambodia. He enjoys gardening and spending time with his daughter in his free time. Ten years ago, Sitha developed nasal polyps, noncancerous growths in the lining of the nasal passage. For this reason he experiences nasal obstruction, headaches, and bleeding. He has difficulty breathing and cannot smell anything. When Sitha learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for one hour seeking treatment. On September 12, doctors will perform a nasal polypectomy to remove the polyps. After recovery, he will be able to breathe more easily. Now, he needs help to fund this $267 procedure. "I hope that after my surgery, I will be able to breathe clearly and will no longer have any obstruction inside my nose."

Nim is seven years old and lives with her family in Cambodia. She likes cartoons and drawing flowers. She had a high fever as a baby, for which she was given several shots in her thighs at a local clinic. Her legs have become very stiff, possibly due to the injections, and she has trouble walking normally. Nim's family brought her to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, and the doctors have decided surgery is necessary. She will need a contracture release surgery, which will help her mobility and leg function. Her surgery is scheduled for November 11. Nim's family cannot afford the cost of the surgery and are appealing to Watsi to help fund the $417 that is necessary. "I hope my daughter can walk normally," says her mother. After surgery, Nim's mobility will hopefully improve and she will be able to continue growing happy and healthy again.

Sokveng is a second grader from Cambodia. He loves to play soccer. Sokveng has strabismus in both eyes. Strabismus is a misalignment of the eye caused by injury or dysfunction in the associated nerves and muscles. He has difficulty seeing clearly, and he is worried about his appearance. Sokveng traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On November 7, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), will perform a corrective procedure to align his eyes. Now, Sokveng needs help to raise $292 to fund this procedure. His mother says, "I hope my son can have good vision and a good education."

Alena is a 42-year-old woman from central Malawi. She lives with her husband and five children on their small groundnut farm. When not caring for her children, sweeping, and cooking, Alena loves spending time with her family and chatting with her neighbors. One year ago, Alena began to experience severe pelvic pain and bleeding. Upon arrival at our medical partner's care center, it was discovered that she has cervical cancer. Doctors recommended that she undergo a hysterectomy as soon as possible. Alena is scheduled to receive treatment on January 19. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $643 to cover the cost of the operation, medication, and seven nights of hospital stay. After recovery, Alena looks forward to returning home to her family, living free of cancer and pain. "I am very ready for the operation," she says. "And I am so thankful Watsi was here to help me."

Chhert is a 59-year-old rice farmer who is married with two sons, two daughters, and one grandchild. He likes to watch boxing matches on TV in his spare time. Three months ago, Chhert developed a cataract in each eye, causing him to exprience loss of vision. It is difficult for him to see things clearly, recognize faces, do any work, go anywhere outside, or ride his motorbike. Chhert heard about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), from a neighbor in his village who had surgery there before. He traveled for two hours with his wife to reach CSC for treatment. When he arrived, he learned that he would need implants in each eye to correct his condition. He is scheduled to have treatment on January 31. CSC is requesting $292 to help fund this procedure. After the implants, Chhert will be able to see clearly again and will be able to go back to his normal life. Chhert says, "I hope to be able to see more clearly than now, so that I can continue my work in my rice fields and go fishing to support my family."

Betty is a 26-year-old mother of three from Uganda. During her free time, Betty enjoys listening to gospel music and radio programs about crime prevention. In August of this year, Betty was in labor for three days without medical supervision. Eventually, she was rushed to the hospital to undergo a C-section. As a result of this delivery, Betty developed an abnormal condition in a sensitive area. Betty and her husband, Isaac, are subsistence farmers, growing maize, sim sim, millet, and soya beans. Betty's condition has affected her ability to work and join others in the community. On October 25, 2016, doctors performed a repair surgery. Now, Betty needs help to pay for this $547 procedure. When she recovers, Betty hopes to make pan cakes to sell at the local market. She also plans to walk her children to school. Betty dreams of taking tailoring classes, so that she can craft clothes and uniforms for children in her community. "I want to thank Watsi for this opportunity to have my health restored, and I wish to thank the donors for making it possible for me to get this operation," says Betty. "I pray that I will get better after surgery, gain my ability, and continue with my work."

"Dhansara was chopping wood in the forest when she lost her balance, slipped and fractured her right leg," our medical partner, Possible, tells us. "The area of injury has swollen and she has been taking medicine to subside the pain." Dhansara is a 46-year-old woman living in Nepal with her husband and 12-year-old daughter. Her broken right femur has added stress on her family. "She is all that I have," says Dhansara's husband. Possible explains, "He worries about how he will keep the family going now that his wife is in a critical condition." For $579, we can fund a procedure to re-align the bones in Dhansara's leg. "Because it's an acutely complicated case, the doctors are trying to realign Dhansara's fractured bones and hold it in place with the help of pins," Possible shares. "If the surgery goes well, the area will be plastered and the bones will heal in about a month or so." Let’s help make this surgery happen for Dhansara!

Say hello to Jovadany, a four-year-old boy from Haiti! According to our medical partner, Project Medishare (PM), “Jovadany is the first child of her mother who is 22-years-old. She is young and lives with her parents. The father of the baby is a motorcycle taxi driver and the mother is a secondhand clothes seller in the streets.” Jovadany deals with a cleft lip and palate; PM says, “according to what the mother of Jovadany says, the baby is not healthy. He cannot talk well and when he eats the food comes out through his nose, and the cleft palate causes some trouble breathing. He cannot breathe well and cannot go to school because of that.” For $960, Jovadany will receive cleft lip and cleft palate repair surgery. Afterwards, Jovadany will be able to drink, eat, and breathe normally. His mother tells us, “I am excited to see my son healed and be able to go to school.” Let’s help Jovadany have a healthy childhood!

This is Marie Nouz, a brave 45-year-old policewoman from Haiti. Marie Nouz decided to see a doctor when she discovered a mass on her breast. Biopsy results determined she had breast cancer. Upon diagnosis, Marie Nouz cried a lot knowing the financial costs needed to overcome her cancer. Her parents have supported her and encouraged her to stay faithful. Marie Nouz loves her job and is unable to go to work. Our medical partner says, "She is annoyed to stay home because she is not used to spending her days without doing anything, and work is the only place where she feels good." For $1,500, we can help Marie Nouz finish her chemotherapy. The treatment will reduce her chance of recurrence significantly. Zaina is a happy nine-year-old girl and the youngest in a family of five children. Zaina has been unable to lead a normal childhood because of a condition that causes fluid to accumulate in the brain. Because of her condition, her head has become too heavy for her body to support. Zaina's mother had to quit her job as a secretary to take care of her daughter. Zaina's father works as a waiter in small local hotel. Supporting a family of five children, his salary cannot cover the cost of Zaina's treatment. Zaina's parents say they pray that someday soon their daughter will be able to sit, stand, and even walk independently. For $1,025, Zaina will receive a shunt to drain the excess fluid from her head.
