Meet Rose, a 13-year old student from Tanzania. Rose suffered a foot injury when she was nine-months-old. “She crawled following a group of children who were playing close to a cow shed which was made out of sticks and dry banana leaves,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) “Suddenly the older children saw a snake crossing inside the shed and they decided to start a fire to kill the snake inside...While the fire was getting hotter, they all ran away leaving Rose seated very close to the burning shed. Her long pants caught fire and ended up with a big wound on her right foot and her little finger.” Rose was treated with traditional herbs and the wound healed, but she ended up with a contracture on her ankle. “Rose’s toes on her right foot are deformed and the foot is pulled upward,” AMHF tells us. “Rose is unable to walk properly or wear shoes due to the contracture of her right ankle. Her right little finger is also badly deformed.” Rose wishes her foot could get back to normal, allowing her to walk properly and wear shoes. “Her mother, who keeps a few livestock, and father, who is a carpenter, have not been able to help their daughter get proper treatment even though they want to,” says AMHF. “With three other children going to school, they just don’t have enough to cover the cost of operation which Rose needs.” “She is in class six and enjoys going to school despite her condition,” continues AMHF. "Rose likes math and science subjects and she enjoys playing netball even though running is a bit of a problem for her.” “My dream is to become a primary school teacher,” says Rose. With $550 in funding, Rose will receive surgery on her right ankle and hand, allowing her to continue learning and growing.
