Meet 43-year-old Mary from Kenya. She is mother to two children and does casual labor to support her daily life. "It was during a cancer screening event at a medical camp in her home area that she was diagnosed with early cancer of the cervix," African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) writes. "Since the diagnosis, life has never been the same for Mary. She has been moving from hospital to hospital looking for help as she was told she could benefit from surgey but she had no money to pay for the surgery herself. Luckily, Mary heard about the Watsi program at Nazareth Hospital and came hoping to get help." Clinicians have recommended a total abdominal hysterectomy for Mary at this time. The cost of this procedure will run at $790 - well out of Mary's immediate reach. "If I get well, I hope to start a small business to support myself and my children,” Mary says. Watsi, let's help get her to that point.

Mwinde is a 13-year-old boy from Kenya. Raised by his grandparents, Mwinde loves to play with his friends. However, he was born with hypospadias, resulting in difficulty in passing urine and occasional urine leakage. In fact, leaving this condition untreated has more serious consequences, like infertility and chronic urine retention. Mwinde wants to become a doctor one day, so being able to go to school without fear of embarrassment is important. Socializing and schooling are rather difficult because of his condition. With a funded treatment, we can see Mwinde become the medical professional he aspires to be. American volunteers have already performed the first operation to repair the hypospadias. However, he needs a second and final surgery. The treatment cost of $450 will cover the surgery, which is expected to allow Mwinde regular urine passage and an improved chance at fertility.

Eunice is 22 and pregnant with her fourth child. She farms and sells sugar cane, bananas, and sweet potatoes in Rongo (the town market). Eunice has been taking what she learns at Lwala Community Alliance to heart. She now has a dish rack, shower and a latrine—precautions that will help keep Eunice and her family healthy. In Kenya, 19 million people lack access to improved sanitation and water supply. These are serious risk factors for disease, especially for pregnant women and children. Eunice is doing what she can around her house, but giving birth in a hospital and antenatal care will provide the best chances of a safe delivery. For $215, Eunice will receive prenatal care, a hospital delivery and a check-up for mother and child. She told Lwala: “God willing, I want to be able to find good money to educate my children. I also want to have a steady income to help…my family.” In providing Eunice with this essential healthcare, she can focus more on being a mom.

Sila is an 8-year-old girl with a foot deformity that makes it impossible to flex her foot or walk. If left untreated, Sila will be unable to walk for the rest of her life. Luckily, doctors at CURE in Kenya can perform a surgical procedure to lengthen Sila’s abnormally rigid tendons. They’re confident that after this procedure, Sila will be able to use her foot with a full range of motion. Sila came to the CURE Hospital with her parents and has stuck close to her family throughout this experience. Her doctors say she’s very quiet and shy, although they managed to get her to smile for a picture. They say this procedure will “make a world of difference” for her, and they are glad she has the opportunity to receive treatment.
