Helen is 13 months old and has malnutrition, a dangerous condition that results from consuming too little protein, calories, and nutrients. In the short term, malnutrition means Helen has little energy to grow and that her immune system is weak. If Helen does not receive treatment, she will also face long-term consequences. Helen lives with her parents, older brother, and grandparents in rural Guatemala. She is a sweet toddler who is trying to learn to walk. Helen likes eating pasta and playing with dolls. While Helen’s parents work hard and want the best for their daughter, they cannot afford treatment for malnutrition. Fortunately, with the help of our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, Helen is scheduled to begin treatment on February 6. Helen's treatment will include growth monitoring, micronutrients, and food supplementation. She will gain weight and grow taller to catch up with other children her age, and her immune system will grow stronger with the increased caloric intake. Community health workers will also teach her mother about creating a nutrient-rich diet with limited resources. Treatment will give Helen’s family tools to maintain nutritious diets, and it will give Helen a chance to grow healthily. Her parents say, "Our hope now is that our daughter grows well, and in the future she decides what profession she wants."

Toeun is a 67-year-old father from Cambodia who has four sons, two daughters, and 19 grandchildren. When he is not taking care of his children or helping around the house, he enjoys going to the pagoda to listen to the monks pray. About a year ago, Toeun developed a cataract in each eye, which cause him blurred vision, tearing, and cloudy lenses. It is difficult for him to see things clearly, recognize faces, do any type of work, and go anywhere on his own. Toeun found out about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), from a neighbor in his village. He traveled for three hours with his sister to reach CSC for treatment. After a phacoemulsification procedure and intraocular lens implant in each eye, Toeun will be able to see clearly again. He is scheduled for surgery on February 2 and needs $292 to fund the procedure. Toeun says, "I hope my eyes can see everything clearly again so that I can help my daughter around the home and take care of our cows. I want to be able to go to the pagoda by myself easily."

Sarorn is a 63-year-old farmer from Cambodia. She is married with four sons and three daughters. In her free time, she enjoys looking after her grandchildren. For the last two years, Sarorn has experienced pain and swelling in her left knee due to tuberculous arthritis. Over the past two months, the pain has worsened, preventing her from walking. A relative told Sarorn about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). She traveled with her son to CSC for a consultation. On January 24, surgeons will perform an arthrodesis procedure on Sarorn's left knee. The joint fusion surgery will relieve her of pain and allow her to walk more easily. CSC is requesting $450 to fund her care.

72-year-old Yoeun is a retired farmer who lives in Cambodia. She is married with five sons and two daughters. On September 30, 2016, Yoeun had a hard fall, fracturing her neck and femur on the right side. Since the accident, she has not been able to walk, and she is in pain. With the help of her son, Yoeun traveled for four hours to reach our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), for treatment. On January 24, surgeons at CSC will replace one half of Yoeun's hip joint with a prosthetic. Watsi is asking for $450 to fund the surgery. Your donation will help cover four nights stay in the hospital, medication, and surgeon fees. After the surgery, Yoeun will be able to walk again more easily.

Evelyn is a two-month-old girl from Guatemala. She is her parents' first child, and they feel blessed to have Evelyn in their lives. Evelyn’s father works as a bus attendant, and her mother stays at home to take care of her. The family enjoys going to church together. Due to feeding difficulties, Evelyn has not been able to gain the proper nutrients needed during this delicate time for brain development. Nutritionists at our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, provided a preliminary supply of formula to improve Evelyn's diet while a nutritional plan is developed for her to begin formal treatment. Through a combination of formula and nutritional education, Evelyn will receive the calories she needs to grow and thrive. She is scheduled to begin treatment on January 19. "I hope that my daughter has the best opportunities to move forward in life," says Evelyn's mother. Wuqu' Kawoq is requesting $1,107 to fund Evelyn's treatment. Proper nutrition will make Evelyn's immune system strengthen, and she will grow to be a healthy, energetic baby.

Say hello to sweet baby Mark! Mark is only a few weeks old. He lives in Uganda with his family. Although Mark’s mother wants more children, she is worried about Mark and what lies ahead for him. Immediately after birth, Mark was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. If left untreated, Mark will be at risk for blindness, brain damage, and even death. For $1,750, Mark will receive an ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) procedure, which will allow movement of the fluid in Mark’s brain. After this procedure, the pressure build up in the head will lessen and the fluid will drain, reducing the chance of brain damage. Treatment will allow Mark to live a productive life. Say hello to Sarun, a 57-year-old father from Cambodia! He has four sons with whom he enjoys spending time. When he is not busy with his children, Sarun likes to stay up-to-date on current events by listening to the news on the radio. Last November, Sarun fell from his house and broke his hip. He tried to let it heal on its own, but it did not, and now Sarun can no longer walk. His injury is painful and Sarun has had to stop working as a haircutter. For $500, Sarun can receive hip replacement surgery and physical therapy to help restore his mobility. Let's help this hardworking father get back on his feet!

Meet Loshiro! He is a seven-month-old boy from Tanzania who was born with a club foot. Loshiro is the youngest of four children and lives with his parents and sisters on their small farm. Loshiro's parents grow maize and vegetables to provide for the family. They cannot afford the procedure needed to correct Loshiro's condition. But if left untreated, Loshiro will learn to walk improperly, which will lead to pain and difficulty for the rest of his life. For $715, Loshiro will receive surgery to correct his condition, giving him the opportunity to learn to walk normally and live an active life!

Youssouf is a dynamic young artist who livens evenings beneath the stars with the music of his balafon (a wooden percussion instrument similar to a xylophone). Youssouf lives in the West African nation of Mali. One day, on his way home from a cattle market, Youssouf was in a car accident which broke his thigh and jaw bone, and caused numerous wounds on his back and face. Due to financial constraints, Youssouf’s parents used traditional treatments for his injuries which further complicated his condition with infection. Youssouf now needs more skillful medical care to ensure his bones heal properly and to fight his current infections. For $1,475, we can fund Youssouf’s treatment and put him on the road to recovery. Youssouf is looking forward to making music again when he's better!

Many years ago, 61-year-old Abel lost his right arm below the elbow in an explosion. Abel received a prosthetic device to replace his arm, but due to changes in his body, the device does not work anymore, causing significant chafing and discomfort. Abel hopes that with a new fitting of a prosthetic, he will be able to use his arm again. Because of its partnership with Watsi, our medical partner in Guatemala has been able to reach patients in remote areas like the one Abel comes from and provide the specialty care that patients like him need. Wuqu’ Kawoq thanks Watsi supporters for “expanding their services” which they say "would not happen without Watsi.” For $940, we can continue expanding access to healthcare by funding a replacement prosthetic arm for Abel and allowing him to use his arm again!

Brian is a six-month-old boy from Tanzania and his parents' first child. His mother is a student and his father is a bus driver, working to support the family. Brian has a gastrointestinal condition that causes him to vomit after breastfeeding. This is serious, because it means that Brian does not retain the nutrition of his mother's breast milk. He is having trouble gaining weight and staying hydrated. If left untreated, Brian will become excessively dehydrated and could lose his life. Brian's parents tell his doctors, "we pray that our son lives." For $700, we can fund a procedure to rectify Brian's condition, allowing him to breastfeed normally and grow up healthy and strong!

Willy is 36 years old and lives in Kenya with his family and three children. He recently became a father to his last child just six months ago and works as a mechanic to provide for his family. Last month, Willy was involved in a car accident and fractured his right leg. Since then, he has not been able to move and is experiencing a lot of pain. He has had some surgery to provide initial treatment, but now he needs a second procedure done to prevent bone infection, deformity, and malunion of his bone. Willy needs to pay for surgery, medication, and hospitalization, and he has already contributed $500 of his own money towards it.
