"As Angelina kept growing, so did the mass," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "Despite her condition, Angelina is an active and happy baby." Seven-month-old Angelina is from Tanzania, and was born with a closed myelomeningocele -- a mass on her lower back which can rupture anytime. If it were to rupture, AMHF tells us, the loss of cerebral spinal fluid would be life-threatening for her. For $1100, AMHF can operate on Angelina and remove the mass. She will no longer have the condition and her family will not need worry about a potential rupture. Her parents work hard selling maize and millet to support the family, but cannot come up with the funds for her surgery. “It is our great hope that our daughter will get the right treatment to remove the swelling on her lower back as it keeps growing bigger and bigger," says Angelina's mother. "We want her to be able to crawl, walk and continue with normal growth like the rest of our children so that later on she can also go to school."

Joan is a one-year-old girl from Kenya. She is the last born child in a family of four children. Her mother runs a small business in one of the slums in Mombasa, while Joan's father is a mason. Joan lives with hydrocephalus, which causes an enlarged head size and increased intra cranial pressure. To relieve the pressure, Joan needs a shunt incision. If we can raise $980, we can give her one. If the surgery is not done, Joan is likely to suffer brain damage due to the increased intra-cranial pressure. Her parents are struggling to just support the family and cannot afford this medical procedure. Nancy is a 26-year-old mother of two who lives with her husband and children in Kenya. Nancy is a farmer, growing maize, beans, vegetables and sugarcane for personal use. Her husband does contract work that allows him to provide basic necessities for the family. Nancy is pregnant with her third child but is experiencing morning sickness, getting sick from the time she wakes until mid-day. This makes it difficult for her to eat and interrupts her daily activities. For $215, we can give Nancy a safe delivery in a health facility attended to by a skilled clinician. “I always end my day with a positive thought. Even though I know I cannot meet the expenses needed for my treatment, I do hope and pray that things will get better,” says Nancy. Braknai is 18-years-old and lives in Cambodia. He works in a karaoke restaurant but his dream is to feel well enough to play sports like soccer and volleyball. When Braknai was 10, a large tree branch fell on his leg. Since that time he has been experiencing pain and has trouble walking. He needs an operation to clear infected tissues in his leg so that he will be able to use it normally. This procedure, an osteotomy, will cost $300 and will take care of the infection in his tibia and improve the function of his leg. Meet Maria, a 47-year-old-woman from Guatemala. Several years ago, Maria developed a tumor in the roof of her mouth. The tumor has continued to grow to the point where she can not swallow and experiences severe pain.
