Meet Maria, a 47-year-old-woman from Guatemala. Several years ago, Maria developed a tumor in the roof of her mouth. The tumor has continued to grow to the point where she can not swallow and experiences severe pain.
A biopsy of the tumor showed that it is benign, but the surgery to remove it is highly specialized and costly. “Maria came to us because she doesn’t know where else to turn,” Watsi’s medical partner writes. “Although she knows what treatment is necessary, she cannot afford it.”
