"I and my wife are working very hard so that our children can have a bright future," says Geoffrey. Meet Geoffrey, a 38-year-old husband and father from Kenya. Geoffrey is married and a father of six. His oldest son has just joined high school and his youngest child is two and a half. Geoffrey and his wife work on a tea farm and make a limited income to support their family, says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). The family rents a small one-room house near their work. “Geoffrey has had wounds on his legs for several years now,” AMHF explains. “He always visits a local hospital [for] cleaning and dressing. But over that the past few months, the infection has made it difficult for the wounds to dry. He was referred to our hospital for care.” AMHF continues, “He is not able to work well because he cannot walk or stand for a long duration of time before the wounds start bleeding. The wounds are itchy and painful.” Given Geoffrey’s financial circumstance, he has not been able to raise the money he needs for treatment. For $940, Geoffrey will receive surgery to address his infection and have the opportunity to live a more normal and pain-free life. “We expect that after treatment and recovery, Geoffrey will be able to work again and the risk of amputation would be reduced,” AMHF tells us. “I have been sad to see that Gerlanda can’t play with her friends as much as she would like to,” shares seven-year-old Gerlanda’s grandmother. Gerlanda lives with her grandmother in Western Haiti. Her parents work in the capital, Port-au-Prince, to support their family, and visit Gerlanda once per year. Gerlanda is a conscientious second grade student who likes attending school very much. “Gerlanda was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, and has a large hole between the two lower chambers (ventricles) of her heart,” explain our partners at Haiti Cardiac Alliance (HCA). "Blood passes freely through this hole without first passing through the lungs to obtain oxygen. If left untreated, this condition would be fatal.” For $1,500, we can fund transportation and cardiac surgery for Gerlanda in a safe, fully-equipped hospital. After surgery, Gerlanda should have normal blood flow through her heart, and no longer be affected by her ventricular septal defect. Meet Kelvin, a sweet two-year-old boy! Kelvin is his mother’s only child, and the two live together in Kenya where she runs a small business. Kelvin was born without an anal opening and is unable to pass stool normally. Shortly after birth a surgical procedure called a colostomy was performed. This made it so that Kelvin could excrete feces into a bag through a hole in his large intestine. Though it helped him, the colostomy left Kelvin susceptible to infections. A second procedure, called a PSARP (pull-through procedure) was done to remove the unhealthy and nonfunctional segment of the large intestine and connect the healthy segment to the anus. To be able to pass stool normally Kelvin needs another surgery to close the hole created by the colostomy. Kelvin’s had a tough road thus far in life, but he and his mother have taken it in stride. Kelvin’s mother told our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, “I am thankful for all the support that we have received. I pray for a successful surgery.” Let’s give her even more support and raise $595 to fund Kelvin’s third – and hopefully final – surgery. African Mission Healthcare Foundation tells us that they expect Kelvin to be able to pass stool normally after this procedure is complete!

Say hi to Jusmy, a three-year-old boy from Haiti! Jusmy’s father says, “I have five kids and I am a small farmer. I work the fields to respond to the needs of my family but it is not enough. I am also a Macon laborer and I do random jobs, but from my locality in the countryside to find a job is very difficult.” Jusmy has a cleft lip, which makes it difficult for him to eat and speak. “I cannot pay for the surgery because it surpasses my means and I could not find the money. I’ve been waiting for so long to find help and I am excited to see how my son is going to be after the surgery,” explains his father. For $960, Jusmy will receive the surgery required to repair his cleft lip. “Today is a very big day for me to be a beneficiary of the program; you cannot imagine how happy I feel,” says his father. "Francisca is a really wonderful woman who recently came to us looking for help," a staff member of Wuqu’ Kawoq, a Watsi medical partner, described. "She's been struggling with multiple medical problems now for years and they've gradually consumed her finances." She has diabetes, chest pains, and other stroke-like symptoms due to her uncontrolled high blood pressure and blood sugar levels. All of Francisca’s problems are controllable, if not curable, given medical attention and financial support. For just $250, Francisca will receive a proper diagnosis and treatment to start her back on the road to good health. This is Daniela, a two-year-old girl from Guatemala. Daniela was developing like any other healthy baby until she contracted meningitis, a very serious bacterial infection affecting the brain and spinal cord. Since then, her development has been severely delayed and is stymied at a six-month-old's level. Her loving parents are determined to help their daughter but lack the financial resources to provide her with the treatment she needs. For $700, we can help Daniela's parents pay for physical and nutritional therapy as well as long-term medical follow-up care. Her doctors expect great things from these treatments, including improvements in motor coordination, speech, and intellectual capacity.

“I want to be able to work again and I dream of one day owning my own business," says Peter, a 33-year-old Kenyan who works as a garbage collector. For the past year, Peter has been unable to work due to ulcers on his legs, a complication of varicose veins that is extremely painful. Peter lives with severe pain when walking and is at risk of infection, which if left untreated could lead to a leg amputation. $500 would allow Peter to receive the varicose vain stripping and skin graft treatments that he needs to be free of pain and no longer at risk of infection and amputation. This is one-year-old Estefany. She looks curious and playful in this picture, but she is also living with severe malnutrition. As a result, Estefany has been missing her developmental milestones, stopped growing in height and weight, and her family is very worried about her. Estefany's treatment plan includes intensive nutritional therapy and a complete laboratory workup to rule out other health problems. She will also need micronutrient supplements to put her growth patterns back on track. Our medical partner in Guatemala can provide all of these things with our support.
