Christopher is a shepherd from Uganda who came to our facility with complaints of a left inguinal swell that has been persistent for five years. The painful swell limits his ability to walk and if not treated, he is at risk further complications such as strangulation. Previously,  he had not been to any medical centre for treatment due to limited finances. However, upon review in our facility, he was diagnosed with inguinal hernia and herniorrhaphy surgery was recommended. Christopher has a hearing impairment. He was brought by his sister whom they live with and their elderly mother. He is a shepherd and their only source of income is his sister's small scale farming. They can't afford the cost of surgery and appeal for help. Fortunately, on January 22nd, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Christopher's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Christopher's sister says, “I hope his condition will improve after surgery."

Kyarimpa is a shopkeeper from Uganda. He is married with four children. For two years, Kyarimpa has had a hydrocele, which is a swelling in a sensitive area. Fortunately, on March 12, he will undergo hydrocele repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $139 to fund Kyarimpa's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Kyarimpa says, “I wish I can be relieved from this condition.”

Estery is a mother of seven from Malawi. Estery lives with her husband and children, and the family works a small farm. Estery spends her days caring for her home and family. In her free time, she likes to sit with the ladies in her village chatting. Since 2016, Estery has been experiencing lower abdominal pain. She has been diagnosed with ovarian cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries. She needs to undergo an ovarian cystectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will excise the cysts. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $541 to fund Estery's surgery. On November 2, she will undergo gynecological surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner's care center. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and seven nights of hospital stay. Estery was very happy to find out she would be funded for her surgery, especially since the operation was more than the family could afford. She says, "I am so happy to have this surgery; I will be able to care for my family and home again!"

Meet Khine, a 16-year-old girl who lives with her family in Burma. She works as a cleaner at her village's nursery school to help support her family. Khine shares with our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), that earlier this year she started experiencing extreme fatigue and had difficulty breathing. Results from an ultrasound indicated that Khine has a cardiac condition, a diagnosis which was eventually confirmed by doctors at a hospital affiliated with BCMF. On September 15, Khine will undergo life-saving heart surgery to repair the atrial septal defect. With $1,500 we can help Khine to get the medical treatment she needs. "I want to go back to work so I can support my family," says Khine.

Kahemura is a 60-year-old father who lives in Uganda. Kahemura lives alone, however he is occasionally visited by his 35-year-old, self-employed daughter. In 2009, Kahemura developed a painful swelling in his lower abdomen that made it difficult for him to perform daily activities, such as working in his garden. For years he ignored his pain until, in May of 2017, his daughter noticed a change in his gait. She insisted that he go to the hospital, where a doctor diagnosed Kahemura with an inguinal hernia and recommended immediate surgery. Without treatment, the hernia could become strangulated, which is a potentially fatal complication in which the hernia cuts off blood supply to the intestines and causes surrounding tissue to die. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $249 to fund hernia repair surgery for Kahemura. The surgery is scheduled to take place on July 19 and, once completed, will hopefully allow Kahemura to walk easily and live more comfortably. “I have a swelling in my right inguinal region it needs surgery and I need help," expresses Kahemura.

Sophia is a five-year-old young girl from Uganda. She lives with his parents and younger brother. Sophia’s parents are both subsistence farmers. At the age of three, Sophia’s parents started to notice her left leg bending inward. They took her to the hospital, where she was given vitamins and calcium supplements. However, she still continued to experience pain and discomfort when walking. Having heard of Watsi’s program with our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), they decided to seek help. Sophia was told she has genu valgus, which results in her left leg bending inward, making it painful and difficult to walk. Doctors recommended surgery. Sophia has subsidized her payment by $22. Our medical partner, AMHF, is requesting $838 to fund corrective surgery for Sophia that will help guide future bone growth. Sophia’s surgery is scheduled to take place on September 15. Sophia’s father says, “I am grateful for this opportunity that my daughter has received. May Allah bless you all.”

Angel is a child from Uganda. She has been having abdominal pain, fever, and headache, and has had difficulty playing with her siblings for the last six months. Angel’s doctor diagnosed her with an umbilical hernia and recommended hernia repair to relieve her pain. A hernia is formed when a weakness in the muscle allows some underlying tissue to bulge through. The tissue can then get trapped, causing complications. Before her symptoms intensified, Angel enjoyed singing, running, and playing with her classmates. She also enjoyed learning letters, but now has trouble because of the pain. On days when she feels better, she enjoys helping her mother peel bananas and wash clothes. Her father is a farmer, and enjoys taking photos in the village. Angel's father says, “I send greeting and thanks to donors for supporting my daughter’s treatment." Watsi is requesting $229 to help fund Angel's hernia repair, scheduled for August 5.

Evelyne is a five-year-old girl from Kenya. She's the second born in a family of three children. Evelyne suffers from congenital angular deformity, a condition in which the joints or bones themselves bend abnormally. Her bones are also very weak and keep breaking. Because of her condition, Evelyne cannot walk or stand on her own, making it difficult for her to play with other kids or attend school. Evelyne has been treated with casting, but her condition has not improved. On June 22, Evelyne will undergo corrective surgery to treat her condition. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,165 to cover the cost of the surgery, five nights of hospital stay, medication, and medical supplies. “My joy is to see my daughter rising up and walk after surgery. I would also want to see her going to school. Due to the struggles I am experiencing, I would request for your help,” says Evelyne's father.

Socheat is a 13-year-old girl and student in the fifth grade. She has one older sister. In her free time, she likes to read books and paint. About one year ago, Socheat developed a cataract in each eye. This makes it difficult for her to see clearly and attend her classes at school. Socheat and her mother traveled for one hour to reach our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), for treatment. On June 20, eye surgeons at CSC will remove the cataract from each eye to help Socheat see more clearly. CSC is seeking $398 to help fund this operation.

Bonabana is a 60-year-old woman from Uganda. A mother of four, she supports herself and her family through her work as a farmer and craftswoman. Her main trade is weaving, and she makes beautiful mats and baskets to sell. Bonabana experienced complications giving birth to her third child. The baby's head was particularly large and strained her body, causing a mass of tissue—part of her uterus—to protrude from the birth canal. Bonabana has remained in this condition ever since, even through the gestation and birth of her fourth child. The protrusion causes her great pain. Bonabana's son brought her to our medical partner's care center, Holy Family Virika Hospital, where the doctors diagnosed her with uterine prolapse. “I have a swelling that is causing me pain and discomfort," Bonabana says. "I am unable to do my duties at home in this condition.” Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $287 to cover the cost of Bonabana's uterine prolapse repair surgery. She is scheduled to receive treatment on April 25. After this operation, Bonabana looks forward to living free of pain and returning to her work.

Esther is a ten-year-old girl from Kenya. She lives in a children's rescue center and attends fourth grade. She wants to be a judge when she grows up. In 2013, Esther was burned with water. She was admitted to the hospital for seven months. After this, she was sent to live at the children's rescue center. Esther has been diagnosed with burn contractures on her left hand. These injuries resulted from the scalding water. She has limited mobility and cannot stretch her fingers properly, which restricts her ability to play and help with chores. “I want to be well, study, and be a judge to defend children," Esther says. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,176 to fund Esther's contracture release operation. This will be added to the $103 that the children's rescue center has been able to raise for her treatment. She is scheduled to undergo surgery at our medical partner's care center, AIC Kijabe Hospital, on March 1. After surgery, she is expected to enjoy full functionality of her left hand.

Pamera is a 38-year-old woman from Uganda. She lives with her husband, Bernard, and they both work as small farmers growing cassava, beans, maize, and vegetables. In addition to farming, they grow and sell tea to help support their children's education. Pamera enjoys attending church and teaching her children to pray. In her spare time, Pamera likes to listen to music on the radio. Pamera is pregnant and expecting her sixth child. Because of her age, the number of children she has had, and her previous C-section, her doctors consider her pregnancy to be high-risk. They recommend that she receive medical attention before, during, and after labor to ensure a safe delivery. On April 29, she will begin to receive supplements and attend antenatal checkups and health education classes. She will deliver her baby in the hospital, and she will undergo a C-section if necessary. After birth, Pamera and her baby will be monitored by the hospital staff. After her delivery, Pamera is looking forward to nursing her baby and returning to work as a farmer. She would like to thank all her donors for their help.
