David was born on February 18, 2009. He is the second born out of four children, and lives with his family in Tanzania. David is a bit shy, but he likes to play hide and seek. He is in first grade, and enjoys learning how to read and write.
David was born with bilateral clubfoot, meaning that he is using the lateral aspect of his feet for walking. This is painful, and has affected his gait. He walks with difficulty and complains of pain on his ankles. If not treated, David will be at risk of developing osteoarthritis at a young age.
David’s parents are small scale farmers who grow and sell maize and green bananas. They have worked so hard to get proper treatment for their son, but they cannot afford the cost of treatment. They are struggling to send three children to school as well as provide for all their needs.
“We are hopeful that our son will get well again and have the ability to walk without difficulties,” David’s parents shared in their pre-operative interview.
For $1,160, David will undergo clubfoot treatment, which includes surgery, casting, and rehabilitation. After treatment is complete, David will be able to walk again. He should have no further complications, and will be able to grow up with a normal gait.
